The co-op shed and the tanker that has to reach it

Start with who orders it. A farm co-op storing a heavy fertilizer solution, a food plant holding brine, a plating shop with a concentrated acid, and a small water plant that took delivery of a dense coagulant all end up in the same place: they need a tank rated well past water, they need it under a shed roof or inside an existing building, and they need the delivery truck to get within hose reach of it. That is this tank. The 1.9 rating is the headline, because 17,431 pounds of contents is nearly twice what the same volume of water weighs, and most 1,100 gallon tanks are not sold to carry it. The shape is what gets it installed: at four feet seven inches the fill opening is at chest height, so the delivery happens off the ground with the driver watching the level, and nobody builds a platform. A dense delivery is also fast, because a wide tank gains little height per gallon, so the person at the opening watches the tank, not the truck. The cost is floor and pad. At the rating this tank puts 17,431 pounds on a seven foot two inch circle, and a rotationally molded floor bears across the whole footprint, so the slab is engineered per the concrete pad sizing guide, level and in full contact, inside a berm sized to 110 percent of the tank where the liquid is regulated. A dense liquid punishes a pad that is not flat far harder than water does. At 160 pounds empty the tank is set by two people and a pallet jack or one forklift, which is worth more on a retrofit than it sounds: it goes through a door and down an aisle a 1,200 gallon column cannot. Black polyethylene passes no light to the liquid and ages well in the sun, and it hides the level, so a sight tube or a sender is the gauge. Four walls in the 1710000 shell, and the 1,000 and 1,200 columns

The top four rows are one molding. Against the natural white C26 this black wall is the buy for a liquid that light degrades, and it gives up the read-through level to get it. Against the N48 and N51, both listed at 180 pounds and rated on their own sheets, the question is only whether the specification asks for a cross-linked or ASTM wall by name; where it does not, this linear black wall already carries a dense liquid at 1.9. Step off the wide base and the two column tanks change the argument entirely: the 1831000C34 holds 1,000 gallons on a five foot circle at seven feet five inches and the 1830200N40 holds 1,200 at nine feet one inch, both for sites with height and no floor, both needing a platform at the top.

The pump goes below the outlet, not beside it

• Pump and suction: four feet seven inches of liquid at 1.9 is a strong static head for a tank this size, and the way to use it is to mount the transfer pump below the 2 inch outlet so it runs flooded to the last few inches. A dense liquid is unforgiving of a pump set level with the outlet or above it: it is heavy to lift, it cavitates early, and it takes a mechanical seal with it. Short, straight suction, one full-port valve, no elbow stack.
• Low-level protection: fit a float or a level switch that stops the pump before it draws air. On a shallow tank the last few inches are a large share of the readable level, so the switch is set by the pump's needs, not by eye.
• Outlet: 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting. Name the liquid at order and the fitting, gasket and bolting are matched to it, with a flexible connector to hard pipe and the first valve on its own support off the pad. A rigid line bolted straight to the bulkhead puts every bit of pump vibration into the wall.
• Access and venting: the sheet gives the opening as 15 inches and says nothing more, so tell us at order how the tank will be filled and drawn down and the top is specified to that duty. A pump drawing down a sealed tank pulls a vacuum and caves it, so the opening is never tight.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

The rest is discipline. The lid stays on between deliveries, the wall carries the name of the one chemical inside, and the label is renewed when the sun fades it. Where it freezes, the valve and the first pipe run get trace heat or insulation; the body takes ice from the top down and tolerates it, but a dense liquid in a small-bore line does not.

Fertilizer sheds, brine rooms and acid day storage

A heavy fertilizer solution at a co-op that wants it dark, brine at a food plant, concentrated acid at a plating shop, and ferric or another dense coagulant at a small water plant: the 1.9 rating and the black wall are bought together, for liquids that are both heavy and light-sensitive. Three plants, class 400, and the lane that decides

The 1710000C34 is molded at Chowchilla, California, Lincoln, Nebraska and Philippi, West Virginia, and ships from whichever plant is nearest the pad as freight at class 400 as the sheet lists it. Fill it with water to the shoulder once and hold it, watching the pad edge and the base fitting for a weep, then drain and dry it before the chemical goes in.
