What a 1.5 duty looks like when it arrives

Start with the delivery, because the delivery is the duty. A tanker or a straight truck pulls up to a plant that uses a liquid close to the weight of water, and somebody has to put 1,200 gallons somewhere in one drop: process water at a manufacturing plant, a dilute solution at a car wash or a laundry, makeup water at a rural system, a light liquid feed at a nursery or a dairy, harvested rainwater at a site that irrigates from it. None of those loads tests a wall. What they test is the room, and this shell answers a room that is short of floor and long on height: a 60 inch circle at 109 inches tall holds the same 1,200 gallons a much wider tank would need a great deal more slab for. Nine feet one inch is above a 96 inch ceiling, so the measurement that decides this tank is taken with a tape and not from a memory of the building. On the ground, plain water puts 10,008 pounds inside the shell and the rating allows 15,012 pounds, and a rotationally molded floor bears on its whole floor, so all of it lands on that 60 inch circle and the slab is engineered to the concrete pad sizing guide rather than poured by rule of thumb, level and in full contact, inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated. Three hundred pounds of empty tank nine feet in the air is a sail, so bands to structure or anchors in the slab go on the day it lands, get checked after the first storm, and get checked again at the end of the first summer. The white wall shows the level in daylight, which on a tank drawn down every shift saves a trip to a panel. One tall shell and the walls listed beside it

This is the plain white wall in the tall shell, and its case is that you pay for the footprint and the height and not for wall a light liquid will never use. The tank one row down is the heavy-duty version of exactly this shell, listed at ten more pounds, and it is the right buy only when the liquid is dense; each of the four is rated as its own sheet says. The two black ones are for a liquid that fades, ferments or grows in daylight, and they cost you the ability to read the level through the wall. Outside the shell the trade is shape for shape: the 1710000C26 spreads 1,100 gallons across an 86 inch base and stops at 55 inches for a low room, and the 1830400N40 gives 1,300 gallons at 87 inches on a 72 inch base when there is floor to spare and a ceiling to respect.

Keeping a transfer pump flooded under nine feet of head

• Pump: nine feet of standing liquid is the best gift a tank gives a pump, so use it. Mount the transfer pump below the tank base, keep the suction run short and straight, and the pump primes on gravity and stays flooded to the last few inches instead of cavitating its way through the bottom of every batch. A low-level float wired to the starter stops it before it draws air, and a strainer ahead of the suction keeps whatever settled out of the last delivery out of the impeller.
• Outlet: the sheet gives the outlet as "1 Manway / Lid" and no bottom fitting size appears on it anywhere. We print the field as given and do not read a blank as a pipe size. Name the liquid and the draw-off you want at order and we will confirm what this molding accepts, in what material, before anything is cut.
• Listed opening: an 18 inch threaded, vented manway at 109 inches, which is platform work with a rail and a gate, plus a permanent fill line landed at the manway so no driver handles a hose nine feet up in the dark.
• Fill and vent: a dip tube to the floor so the stream does not free-fall the height of the shell and foam, the vent run outdoors on anything that fumes, and the vent sized to the delivery pump rather than the nearest port.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C. Warranty: 3 year. Rating: specific gravity 1.5 as the sheet gives it.

The plumbing discipline is the same on a light liquid as on a heavy one, because what damages a tank is not the liquid but what is bolted to it: every run leaving the base sits on its own support off the pad with a flexible connector between tank and hard pipe, slack rather than stretched, so thermal movement and pump pulse stay out of the shell. A warm liquid moves the wall more than a cold one, and this wall is listed warm. Keep the manway threaded shut between deliveries so vapour stays in and rain stays out, label the wall with the one liquid inside, and put a light on the band above the liquid line at every opening. Where the site freezes, protect the base piping and the first valve rather than the body, which takes ice from the top down without harm.

Bulk water and light solution duty

Process and rinse water at a plant, dilute solution storage at a wash or laundry operation, makeup and hauled-water storage at a rural system, nursery and dairy feed solution, and harvested rainwater on a site that irrigates or flushes from it. The sheet gives class 300 and 300 pounds shipping weight from Chowchilla, California. It is a tall, light parcel, so the lane prices on the deck space rather than the scale: put your ZIP into the freight cost estimator before the purchase order and read the listed price as before freight. Take it off the trailer on the pallet with a jack or a forklift, straps under the body and never through the manway, and set it on the finished pad instead of a staging slab somebody will have to move it off. Fill it with water to the manway, hold it, walk the base and the pad edge twice looking for movement or a weep, then drain and dry it before the working liquid arrives. Leave enough room on the pad to walk all the way around the tank, because the side nobody can reach is the side that hides a weep until it is a puddle.
