The day tank with the wide manway

A day tank holds one shift or one day of chemical close to the dosing pump, so a leak is a small one and a wrong fill is caught early. An 18 inch manway on a 36 inch tank is the detail to notice: it admits a fill hose, a float switch and a level sender at once, and a wash-down wand reaches every part of the floor at changeover, which a 6 or 8 inch lid does not allow. The N42 is the cross-linked twin for hypochlorite and the other oxidizers. On the same 36 inch base, the 1012900C26 is 40 gallons smaller and 9 inches shorter, and the 1013000N45 is 40 gallons bigger and 8 inches taller; the 5740100N42 lays 275 gallons down to 59 inches on a 47 inch base, in cross-linked resin, for under a bench.

Openings, instruments, containment

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway; filled by hose or tote pump through a dip tube, vented outside on anything that fumes.
• Outlet: the bulkhead fitting is chosen for the chemical at order time; a flexible connector to the pump suction, with the valve carried by a bracket rather than the fitting.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

A white 64 inch tank shows its level in daylight; a low-level float switch keeps the pump from running dry in a pump room, and a sender chosen for the chemical does the rest. Set the dosing pump lower than the outlet so gravity primes it, put a union and a check valve in the suction line, and give the vent a short line routed away from the pump's electrical gear. A 36 inch tank fits a standard spill pallet, which is bought with the tank and emptied if it ever catches anything.

Turnover and changeover

Size the refill schedule so the tank turns over before the chemical degrades; hypochlorite in particular is bought in small lots often, and a day tank that sits for a season wastes chlorine. At changeover the wide manway pays for itself: drain through the outlet, rinse through the manway with a wand, drain again, and let it dry before the new fill, because residue from the last product is the usual cause of a cloudy first batch. Keep the manway closed against vapor loss and the tank out of direct sun where the chemical is light-sensitive, and log each fill with its date and strength.

In service

Hypochlorite and caustic day tanks at small water systems, polymer make-down on a wastewater skid, acid and inhibitor feed at a cooling tower, brine for a softener, and the lab or pilot plant that needs 250 gallons of reagent within reach of a bench. One chemical per tank, labeled.
