The Snyder Industries 550 Gallon Megatainer is a non-caged, stackable plastic IBC tote built for bulk industrial process fluids. It holds 550 gallons in a 60-inch-tall body on a 48 x 81 inch footprint, molded in white polyethylene and rated to a 1.9 specific gravity — heavy enough to carry dense chemistries that overload a standard caged 1.0 SG IBC. This listing is the Megatainer system without inserts. Buyers shopping an "IBC tote," "tote tank," or "IBC tank" for dense, stackable bulk storage are looking at the right unit.

Will it work for your fluid?

Run the math before you buy. Full of water (specific gravity 1.0) the tank and contents weigh about 4,587 lb. At the full 1.9 SG rating, maximum rated contents weight is 8,715 lb — that ceiling is what makes this tote viable for heavy acids and concentrated salts that would exceed a 1.0 SG container. The 81-inch length and 48-inch width set your rack spacing and forklift access; confirm floor loading and your stacking plan against those numbers and the technical drawing on this page. One high-demand use case this tote suits directly: it handles DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) at 32.5% with 316 stainless fittings and an EPDM gasket. If you are still deciding whether a tote is even the right packaging tier, the Container vs Tank guide and the drum vs tote vs bulk tank break-even analysis work through the volume-and-turnover math. For capacity planning, run the Tank Sizing Calculator or read the Tank Sizing Guide.

Chemical compatibility

This tote is polyethylene rated to 1.9 specific gravity. The resin is recorded as HDLPE, but confirm HDLPE versus XLPE with us before committing it to chemical service — that distinction changes which fluids and temperatures it tolerates, and it matters most for the oxidizers and strong acids below (sulfuric 98%, hydrochloric 37%, hydrogen peroxide 50%, sodium hypochlorite, peracetic acid). The chemistries listed come from the OEM chemical-resistance chart and are concentration- and temperature-specific; verify your exact concentration and operating temperature against that chart before ordering, and spec the matching fitting and gasket material:

  • DEF 32.5% — 316SS fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Urea Solution 50% — PP/PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Acetic Acid 60% — PP/PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Aluminum Sulfate 50% — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Calcium Chloride 40% — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Ethylene Glycol 100% — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Ferric Chloride 50% — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Ferric Sulfate 60% — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Ferrous Sulfate 20% — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Hydrochloric Acid 37% — PVC fittings, Viton gasket (details)
  • Hydrofluoric Acid 48% — PP/PVC fittings, Viton gasket (details)
  • Hydrofluosilicic Acid 26% — PP/PVC fittings, Viton gasket (details)
  • Hydrogen Peroxide 50% — PVC fittings, Viton gasket (details)
  • Magnesium Chloride 30% — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Peracetic Acid 30% — 316SS fittings, Aflas gasket (details)
  • Phosphoric Acid 85% — PVC fittings, Viton gasket (details)
  • Polyaluminum Chloride — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)

  • Potassium Hydroxide, saturated — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Propylene Glycol — PP/316SS fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Sodium Bisulfate — PVC/PP fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Sodium Bisulfite — PVC/PP fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Sodium Carbonate 30% — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Sodium Hypochlorite <16.5% — PVC fittings, Viton gasket (details)
  • Sodium Thiosulfate 40% — PVC fittings, EPDM gasket (details)
  • Sulfuric Acid 98% — CPVC fittings, Viton gasket (details)
  • Zinc Orthophosphate — PP/316SS fittings, EPDM gasket (details)

The mistake to avoid

The 1.9 SG rating is a contents-density ceiling, not a green light for every chemical — and the wrong gasket fails before the tank does. Do not assume EPDM is universal. Several chemistries here require a Viton gasket instead: hydrochloric acid 37%, hydrogen peroxide 50%, sodium hypochlorite <16.5%, phosphoric acid 85%, hydrofluoric acid 48%, hydrofluosilicic acid 26%, and sulfuric acid 98%. Peracetic acid 30% calls for an Aflas gasket. Sulfuric acid 98% also needs CPVC fittings rather than standard PVC, and DEF, peracetic acid, propylene glycol, and zinc orthophosphate require 316 stainless fittings. Spec the gasket and fitting material to your actual fluid and concentration, not to the tank alone. If your application carries secondary-containment obligations, the Snyder Captor Plus 110% containment vs UL-142 comparison and the RCRA 40 CFR 264.193 secondary-containment guide cover when a containment basin is required.

This Megatainer ships LTL freight, palletized for forklift handling, quoted live to your ZIP code. Use the Freight Cost Estimator for a freight estimate, or call 866-418-1777 and we will quote freight and confirm the right fitting and gasket package for your fluid before it leaves the dock.
