The Snyder 1370200N45 is a white high density linear polyethylene open top containment tank, a plain cylinder 60 inches across and 58 inches tall with no lid and no fittings, holding 650 gallons at 250 pounds. Its wall is rated for a specific gravity of 1.9, or 10,300 pounds of contents against 5,421 for water, so it holds concentrated acid, ferric and the heavy brines at strength, which is the point of an open basin: it stands under a smaller chemical tank as the catch for a leak, or it is the open vessel a plant mixes, dips or rinses in. What an open top tank is for
Two jobs. The first is secondary containment: a chemical tank stands inside the basin, so a leak at a fitting or a wall is caught in a vessel rated for the same liquid instead of running across the floor, and the rule most inspectors apply is that the basin holds 110 percent of the largest tank inside it. The 60 inch inside diameter takes a 48 inch tank with room around it for a hand and a hose, and 58 inches of wall is a lot of catch volume beside a tank that height. The second job is open process: a mixing tank with an agitator on a bridge across the top, a dip tank for parts, a rinse or neutralizing tank, a quench tank, anywhere the liquid has to be reached from above. The 1.9 wall is what makes it usable for both with acid in it; a water-rated basin is for water. The 578TDVOT-45 is the 500 gallon open top on a 48 inch base, 77 inches tall: the taller, narrower basin for a site with height and no floor, or the mixing tank where a deeper column suits the agitator. Fittings, and the absence of them
- Openings: none molded in. The top is open; the wall and floor are blank. Tell us the liquid and where the drain or the overflow goes and a bulkhead fitting is installed to order, matched to the chemical.
- Rim: a stiffened open rim; a bridge for an agitator or a cover to keep rain out of a containment basin is site-built and bears on the rim, never on the wall below it.
- Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.
As containment the basin usually wants no fitting at all: a drain is a hole, and a hole is where the catch volume leaves. If there is a drain, it is a valve that stays closed and locked, opened by a person to a known destination after a spill is identified. As a process tank the drain goes low on the wall with a flexible connector to hard pipe and the valve supported off the floor, and a low-level float protects a recirculating pump. Outdoors, a containment basin collects rain, which counts against the 110 percent; a cover or a regular pump-out keeps the volume available.
