Manway, outlet and the interstice

• Access: 18 inch hinged, lockable manway with a strainer basket; the drain pan pours straight in, and the strainer catches the plug and the gasket.
• Outlet: 2 inch male camlock with an internal draw pipe; the hauler's hose couples at the top and pumps from the floor of the primary.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

There are two levels to watch: the primary, read through a sight tube or a dipstick through the manway, so the tank is called for pickup before it is full, and the interstitial space, which is the leak alarm and gets a look each week and a note in the log. A wet interstice is a failed primary, and the tank is drained the same day. Keep the manway locked between drains, keep the tank away from the heater and out of the sun, and keep coolant, solvent and brake fluid out of it, because the hauler tests the load and rejects a contaminated tank.

Pickup day

The hauler couples to the camlock, pumps the tank down through the draw pipe, and leaves; nothing is lifted, poured or opened. Log the gallons taken and the date, because that log is what the fire inspector and the waste regulator both ask for, and it tells you how often to schedule the truck. Once a year, with the tank empty, open the manway and look at the floor of the primary and the strainer for sludge, and rinse the strainer.
