Low and wide, for water you can reach

A 122 inch tank sits about as high as a single storey eave. That is why people choose this shape: rainwater collection beside a barn or a house, a livestock or garden supply, a wash water tank under a shed, a fire reserve that a neighbour or a homeowners association will accept. The manway is close to the ground, so a short ladder gets you to the lid for a fill or a look inside, and a float gauge is easy to service. The black wall keeps light out, which is what keeps stored water free of algae. The cost of a low tank is floor area. A wide tank is steady in wind once full, but at 1,400 lb empty it can still slide or lift in a storm, so anchor it before the first fill.

What to check before you buy

1. The volume. Check 7,000 gallons against your roof area or daily use with the tank sizing calculator and the tank sizing guide.
2. The outlet. No bottom fitting is listed, only the manway. Tell us the pipe size and what the water feeds and we will confirm the outlet before anything is drilled. Use a flexible connector to hard pipe.
3. The inlet. For rainwater, bring the downpipe into the 18 inch threaded vented manway through a screen or a first flush diverter, and keep the vent clear.
