Shade, a band to the wall, and a pallet's worth of pad

Three things decide the site for this tank. Shade first: the black wall is there to keep light off the liquid, and it does, but it also runs warmer than white in the sun, and this tank's limit is 120 F, so an outdoor pad goes on the north side of the building or under a roof, and a hypochlorite tank in a hot climate goes indoors. Then the band. Nine feet nine inches of tank on a four foot base weighs 220 pounds empty with its center of gravity at chest height, and the wind through an open bay door or a forklift bump puts it over; a band to the wall or a post at the top third goes on before the first fill and is checked after the first hot month, because polyethylene grows in the heat and loosens what was tight. Then the pad. Full at the rating it carries 13,469 pounds on a four foot circle, a heavier load per square foot than the wide tanks in this size, so the slab is engineered to the concrete pad sizing guide, level and in full contact, inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated. The roof line is the last check: 117 inches to the manway, plus the vent and fill lines, under a ten foot ceiling, and a platform or a ladder with a rail to open it. A black wall hides the level; a sender read at the pump is the gauge. The tall 850 shell, wall by wall

Buy this one when the liquid is dense, light-sensitive and cool. The 1810000N48 is the same shell in black cross-linked polyethylene with a higher limit on its own sheet, for a liquid that arrives warm; the 1810000N42 is the white cross-linked tank for a warm liquid that does not mind light; the 1810000C34 is the other black chemical wall, listed at 210 pounds where the rest of the shell is 220, which the sheet gives and we print; each is rated as its own sheet says. For a low room, the 5990900N42 spreads 750 gallons on a 68 inch base at 66 inches, and the 1831000C34 holds 1,000 gallons in black on a five foot circle at 89 inches.

Bulkhead, float and the first valve

• Outlet: the sheet lists one opening, the manway; the bulkhead outlet is fitted at order to the pump and pipe you name, in the material the liquid calls for, with a flexible connector to hard pipe and the first valve supported off the pad.
• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 117 inches up; a platform or a ladder with a rail; a dip tube to the floor for the fill; a vent run outdoors on a liquid that fumes, sized to the delivery pump.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

Name the pump and the outlet follows. A hypochlorite metering pump wants a small bulkhead and a short suction line in the material the chemical calls for; a transfer pump that drains the tank wants more; either way the fitting is sized at order to the pump, not to the wall, and it sits under ten feet of dense liquid, nearly twice the pressure water would put on it at the same height, which is why the connector to hard pipe is flexible and the first valve stands on its own support instead of hanging on the tank. The pump goes below the outlet, where that head keeps it flooded to the last few inches, and a low-level float stops it before it draws air. The lid stays on between deliveries so vapor stays in and grit stays out, the wall carries the name of the one chemical inside, and the headspace band gets a light at every opening. Where winters freeze, the valve and the first pipe run crack before the tank does; wrap or trace them, and let the body ice from the top down.

Small water systems and package plants

Sodium hypochlorite at a small water or wastewater system, ferric at a package treatment plant, a co-op's dark-stored fertilizer solution, and a metal finisher's day tank of a dense acid kept out of the sun. It is a chemical wall; a fire reserve is sized in a water tank as the fire-water reservoir design guide describes, and 850 gallons is too small for one in any case. Nobody leaves the pad during the first delivery; watch it from the first gallon to the last, and keep one spare gasket for the outlet on the shelf.
