Where the tall shape pays off

Buy this shape when floor space is the limit and height is not. At 23 inches across it goes through a door and stands in a corner of a well house, a utility room or a greenhouse, and at 63 inches it puts the water surface more than five feet above the outlet. That head is the point: it floods a pump so it starts against water instead of air, and it runs a gravity line to a trough, a bench or a wash station below the tank without a pump at all. The trade is stability. A tank five feet tall on a two foot base tips easily when it is empty and carries 834 lb of water when it is full, so strap it to a wall or a post before the first fill, and set it on a flat, continuous surface that carries the whole floor. Fill it through the inlet or the lid; at 63 inches the lid is at head height for most people, so put the level gauge or sight line where you can read it from the ground. Openings and fittings

1. Outlet. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, factory installed low in the wall. A 2 inch valve, camlock or hose adapter threads straight in, and a 2 inch drain empties the tank quickly. Support the valve and the first length of hose so the fitting carries water, not hardware.
2. Inlet. A 1-1/2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting for the fill line or the overflow. Run an overflow to daylight away from the base.
3. Lid. An 8 inch lid on top: large enough to fill from a hose, drop a float in and look inside, not large enough to reach in and scrub, so clean through the openings or with a wand.
