A 500 gallon 45 degree cone bottom tank for batching and complete drain-down
The Norwesco 500 gallon 45 degree cone bottom tank, part number 41489, is a natural white polyethylene tank 52 inches in diameter and 82 inches tall, weighing 125 lb empty. The 45 degree cone is the steepest Norwesco moulds at this size: liquid runs to the outlet with nothing left on the floor, and settled solids follow it out instead of caking in a corner. It comes with a 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting at the bottom of the cone and a 12 inch threaded vented lid on top. The tank is rated for liquids up to 1.5 specific gravity, or 12.52 lb per gallon. Norwesco states the resin is FDA compliant, the service limit is 120 F, and Norwesco backs the tank with a 3 year warranty. A cone bottom tank cannot stand on its own point, so it needs Norwesco's stand, part number 41493, which is sold separately.

Why a 45 degree cone
Pick the cone angle by what has to come out of the tank. A 45 degree cone empties completely and quickly, which is what you want for mixing fertilizer or chemical batches, for anything with suspended solids, and for any process where the next batch cannot sit on the dregs of the last one. The cost of that angle is height: this tank stands 82 inches before the stand goes under it, so measure the ceiling and the doorway first. What goes in it
Water, liquid fertilizer, brine and the common treatment chemicals that polyethylene handles are the normal loads, up to 1.5 times the weight of water. Openings, fittings and the stand
- Outlet. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting at the point of the cone. Your valve threads straight in. Fit the valve before the tank goes into the stand, because there is little room to swing a wrench once it is seated.
- Lid. A 12 inch threaded vented lid on top, wide enough to fill from a hose and to drop a float or a probe in. It is a lid, not a manway: plan on cleaning this tank by flushing through the cone rather than by climbing in.
- Stand. Norwesco's stand 41493 is made for the 45 degree cone; a 30 degree stand will not cradle it. The stand height sets what fits under the outlet, so measure your valve, pump or drum before the order.
