The Norwesco N-40900 is a 500-gallon applicator saddle tank molded in yellow polyethylene for field application of liquid fertilizer and ag chemicals. It carries a 1.5 specific gravity rating, weighs 121 lbs empty, and measures 75" long by 48" wide by 51" high with a 48" x 75" saddle footprint that seats onto a sprayer frame or applicator skid. The tank ships with a 1.25" outlet and an 8" lid, is FDA approved, and is rated to a maximum contents temperature of 120 F / 48 C. If you are matching this tank to a trailer or applicator bar, run your numbers through the Tank Sizing Calculator and the Tank Sizing Guide before you buy.

Will it handle your load

Filled with water, 500 gallons weighs about 4,170 lbs; at the full 1.5 SG rating the tank supports up to 6,255 lbs of contents. That headroom is what makes a saddle tank practical for dense fertilizer blends rather than water alone. Because the tank rides on a frame and takes road shock, confirm your applicator or trailer is rated for the loaded weight and that the saddle contacts the tank across its full 48" x 75" footprint. For the DOT scope questions that come up with fertilizer applicator and leg tanks, see our guides on applicator and leg tanks and the Non-Roadable Trailer scope and the 49 CFR 173.5 agricultural exemption.

Chemical compatibility

This tank is molded polyethylene with a 1.5 specific gravity rating. Norwesco's resin designation here reads HDLPE with an open question, so confirm HDLPE versus XLPE before you commit it to any chemical service. Per the Snyder Industries OEM chemical resistance chart — which is always concentration and temperature specific — the 1.5 SG tank is rated for chemicals including acetic acid (60%), aluminum sulfate (50%), calcium chloride (40%), DEF (32.5%), ferrous sulfate (20%), magnesium chloride (30%), sodium carbonate (30%), urea solution (50%), and ozonated water up to 10 PPM. The tank shell being rated is only half the job: the fittings you thread into the 1.25" outlet and seat under the 8" lid must be the chemical-appropriate material — PVC with EPDM gaskets for most of these, 316SS with EPDM for DEF — and you should stay within the 120 F / 48 C contents limit, since the resistance ratings are temperature-dependent. Two of these services carry real margin over the shell rating: DEF and urea solution are rated at 1.35 SG, so this 1.5 SG tank sits comfortably above both. Other chemicals you may want to run — ethylene glycol, ferric chloride, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, sodium hypochlorite, and sulfuric acid among them — exceed this tank's 1.5 SG rating and require a higher-SG (1.9) tank instead; note these also step the sealing material up to Viton (or Aflas for peracetic acid) and, for sulfuric, a CPVC fitting, so they belong in the higher-rated tank, not this one. Verify your exact chemical, concentration, temperature, and fitting and gasket materials against the chemical compatibility chart and the technical drawing on this page before ordering.
