Openings and the interstice

A double wall tank has two levels to watch: the liquid in the primary, with a sender chosen for the chemical, and anything that appears in the interstitial space, which is the leak alarm; a simple float or conductivity switch in the interstice does that job. The space is inspected on a schedule, a look into the port each shift and a logged check each week, and anything found there is a primary leak that takes the tank out of service the same day. Turnover and changeover

A thousand gallons is four totes, on a schedule set by the feed rate; size the schedule so the tank turns over before the chemical degrades, and for hypochlorite that means small lots often. The low shape earns its keep at changeover: the manway is at chest height, the floor is a hand's reach through it, and a wash-down wand cleans the interior without anyone leaning over an opening. Drain, rinse, drain again, and let it dry before the new fill. Mount the dosing pump below the outlet so it primes by gravity, and give the vent a line routed away from the pump's electrical gear.

Installing a double wall tank
