Why the heavy wall and the bolted flange

A rotationally molded tank's empty weight is its wall thickness, and 427 pounds against 300 for the standard tank in this mold is a thick, stiff shell that resists sagging on an imperfect pad, holds its shape through decades of sun and thermal cycling, and carries pipe loads at the outlet. The bolted flange is the fitting that matches: it clamps through the wall with a ring of bolts and holds a rigid suction line, a heavy valve or a fire department connection without working the resin the way a threaded nut can. The WB62 is the black 2,600 gallon tank, 6 inches taller and 31 pounds lighter. The 32747 is the standard-wall 2,500 gallon tank on the same base, 127 pounds lighter with threaded fittings, for the site that fills a tank and leaves it. The 32781 steps to 3,000 gallons on a 102 inch base at 97 inches, a water wall spread over more volume.

Fittings and access

• Inlet: 1-1/2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting.
• Outlet: 2 inch polypropylene fitting with a stainless steel bolted flange, at the base; re-torque the bolts after the first full fill.
• Access: 24 inch threaded, vented manway.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

Pipe the outlet through a flexible transition even on a bolted flange; a 91 inch polyethylene wall still grows and shrinks with the day. Level through the green wall is a sight tube off the outlet or a float gauge through the 24 inch manway. Where the tank is a fire reserve, the bolted outlet is where the draft connection goes: a rigid pipe to a threaded fire department connection at the property line, supported on its own stands, with a strainer inside the tank and a check valve so the tank cannot be back-fed. Mark the connection and keep the approach clear for an engine.

A forklift with long forks sets 427 pounds on the pad. Strap it while empty, fill in stages per the hydrostatic test methodology guide, and torque the flange once more after the hold.
