Snyder Industries 4000 Gallon Heavy Duty Vertical Storage Tank

The heavy wall, and who needs it

Snyder makes this tank in a standard wall rated 1.5 as well; this heavy duty tank weighs 790 lb empty. The heavier wall is the 1.9 rating, and it is only worth paying for when the liquid is dense: ferric and alum at a water plant, acid or caustic at an industrial plant, brine at a food plant. Water and light chemicals do not load the wall and belong in the standard tank. Full of water it weighs 4,000 x 8.34 = 33,360 lb plus the tank, and a dense liquid at the rating close to twice that, on a 102 inch circle. The slab is engineered per our concrete pad sizing guide, inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated, and the empty tank is restrained before the first fill because ten feet of polyethylene catches wind. Openings and fittings

1. Vent first. The 18 inch manway is vented, and on a tank that takes most of a tanker at a time the vent is sized before anything else. The truck's pump pushes air out as fast as it pushes liquid in; a vent that cannot keep up lets the shoulder pressurize, and on the draw a fast transfer pump pulls the wall in. 2. Outlet. A 3 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting low in the wall: a strong flooded suction for a pump at pad level, and enough bore to unload a full tank in a working shift. Support the valve and the first pipe run off the pad.
3. Manway. 126 inches up, so plan a platform with a rail for whoever opens it, and fill through a dip tube so the liquid is not dropped ten feet.
