Tall and narrow, and what that asks of the slab

Where this one sits is a different problem from the wide tanks above it in the family, and the difference is all in the proportion: a 53 inch base carrying 81 inches of height. Four and a half feet square is a footprint that fits in a corner, beside a skid, or in the gap between two lines that a six foot tank would block, and that is the reason to buy this size rather than a squatter shell of similar volume. The price of it is that the load is concentrated. Above that base sits 4,170 pounds of water at 8.34 pounds per gallon and 7,923 pounds at the published 1.9 rating, all of it on four and a half feet each way, so the surface has to be flat, continuous and level across the whole footprint with no rock and no packing at a corner. A tall vessel on a small base is also the one that shows a bad floor: it leans, and a lean is visible from across the room long before anything leaks. The route matters more here than the destination. At 53 inches wide the tank will not pass a standard 36 inch doorway, so the way in is a bay door or a shutter, and at 81 inches it is nearly seven feet before it goes anywhere near a pallet. On a pallet it is taller again, which is what catches people out: the lintel, the roller shutter guide, the overhead pipe run and the sprinkler line are the measurements to take on the walk, and they should be taken at the narrowest and lowest point of the route rather than at the entrance. Move it upright where the route allows. Standing a tank of this height back up in a confined space is the awkward part of the job and it is worth avoiding. Once it is in, leave clearance to walk all the way round it and to approach it square with forks, and keep it out of a busy walkway: a slim vessel in traffic gets knocked, and a knocked contained tank is one somebody has to stop and inspect. Plan the reach as well. The top of the shell is close to seven feet, which puts the manway above head height for most people, so a step, a platform or a permanent fill line brought down to working level is part of the installation and not an afterthought. Three more 500s, a 405 and a 550

Four of these six are the same 53 by 53 by 81 inch shell at the same 290 pounds and differ only in the name and the color the maker gives them, and one of the four is spelled with a different prefix on the sheet; we print every sku exactly as it is given rather than tidying them into a pattern. What those names imply is not explained on the sheet and will not be guessed at here. Tell us the chemistry and the duty and we will point you at the right part number. The two rows that are genuinely different sizes show how much the proportion changes across a small range of gallons. The 405 gallon 5990702N42 is the same idea one step down: 48 inches square and 73 inches tall at 250 pounds, so it saves a few inches in every direction and gives up around a fifth of the volume. If the corner is tight or the lintel is low, that is a sensible trade. The 550 gallon 5040000N30 is a completely different tank for barely more capacity: 76 inches square but only 65 inches tall at 315 pounds. It swaps height for floor, which is the right answer under a low ceiling or where the manway has to be reachable from the ground, and the wrong answer in a plant room where the floor is already spoken for. That is really the whole choice in this part of the family. Decide whether your hard constraint is the ceiling or the slab, and the row picks itself; this tank is the one for sites where the floor is the scarce thing.

One published opening, 18 inches across

• The outlet: the outlet field reads 1 Manway / Lid, which names an opening and not a pipe size, and no inlet, thread, flange or valve appears anywhere on this sheet. Nothing further is claimed. Tell us the duty and the line size and we will confirm what this part number carries before the pump is specified.
• The opening: an 18 inch threaded vented manway is the only opening published, which makes it the fill route, the inspection route and the cleaning route at the same time. Plan everything you want on top around one opening before the tank is set.
• Reaching it: the shell is 81 inches tall, so the manway sits above head height for most people. A step or a platform is part of the job, and a fill line brought down to working level saves a driver climbing at every delivery.
• Pump arrangement: with the published route in and out at the top, the common arrangement at this size is a suction line and strainer dropped through the manway to a pump nearby. Keep the suction short, set the strainer clear of the bottom, and carry the hose on its own support rather than on the manway rim.
• The vent: the manway is listed as vented. On a tall, narrow shell the level moves quickly for a given flow, so that path earns its keep on every fast delivery and every hard pump down. Keep it clear and inspect it whenever the manway comes off.
• The space between the walls: no monitoring port, gauge or alarm is published, and no stand, legs or level device either. The arrangement for watching that space is specified separately and it is the part of a contained tank worth writing a procedure for.

Name the product when you order. On a contained vessel the wetted parts are the only route a release can take, and they are chosen against the chemistry rather than against a default.

Plant rooms that trade floor for height

This shape lands where the volume is wanted and the floor is already committed: a dosing or disinfection room at a small water or wastewater works, a treatment skid in a food, beverage or dairy plant, a boiler house or cooling tower chemical station, a pool and aquatics plant room, a plating shop, a laundry or vehicle wash, and industrial lines that take a delivery every few weeks and dose continuously between them. Five hundred gallons on four and a half feet square is a great deal of contained volume for the space it occupies, which is exactly the trade a crowded plant room needs.

Two pieces of reading are worth doing before the vessel is ordered. Eighty-one inches on a pallet, and the lintel
