The plant that buys a feed station instead of a tank

A feed station is bought by an operator who has already decided the dosing is the job. A water or wastewater plant feeding hypochlorite, caustic or a coagulant into a line at a fixed rate. A pulp, food or metal finishing plant with a day tank beside the process. A cooling tower system dosing treatment chemical. A car wash or a laundry with bulk detergent. A mine or a power station with a small chemical building and a pump that must not lose prime. What those buyers want is not more gallons; it is one delivery a fortnight instead of drums every other day, and a suction the pump never has to fight. That is what the 88 inches buys. Standing the tank on its own frame lifts the 3 inch outlet clear of the floor, so the pump sits below the low point and stays flooded, the drain runs into a carboy or a sump without a transfer pump, and there is room under the tank to see a leak before it becomes a puddle you find with your boot. Gravity to the pump: 3 inches out of the low point

• The pump and the drain: the sheet lists a 3 inch outlet, and the whole point of the stand is what sits under it. Put the metering or transfer pump below that outlet on its own base, with a short falling run into the suction, and the column above keeps it flooded through the batch. A 3 inch outlet also means the station can be dumped to a drum, a sump or a tanker in a hurry when a load has to come out, which is a real advantage over a small drain when a wrong delivery arrives.
• Prime and protection: an isolation valve at the outlet, then the flexible connector, then a cleanable strainer before the pump. Add a low level float or probe that stops the pump with liquid still above the fitting, because a metering pump run dry on a chemical duty is a maintenance call and sometimes a whole day.
• Access and filling: an 18 inch lid on top at 88 inches. That is above head height, so the fill line comes to a coupling at working level and the lid is opened from a platform or a step with a hand rail, not from the top of a drum. Keep the vent path clear at all times.
