The Snyder Industries 550 Gallon Black Vertical Water Storage Tank (SKU WB32) is a polyethylene vertical water tank built for above-ground bulk water storage on a compact 64-inch round footprint, standing 46 inches tall. The opaque black exterior blocks light transmission, which helps inhibit algae growth in outdoor water storage, and the tank carries a 1.0 specific gravity rating, meaning it is rated for water and water-density liquids only. If you are sizing a vertical storage tank for a rural site, a reuse train, or a fire-water reservoir, this 550-gallon black tank covers the mid-capacity range without the floor space a wider tank demands.

Will it work for your site?

Filled to capacity, this tank holds 550 gallons of water weighing 4,587 pounds, which is also its maximum rated contents weight at the 1.0 specific gravity rating. Plan your pad for that load over the 64.0 x 64.0 inch footprint. Because the contents weight equals the full-water weight, this tank should carry water or other liquids no denser than water; anything heavier exceeds what the wall is rated to support. At the 1.0 SG rating the wall and the EPDM-sealed polypropylene fittings are matched to water service only — do not use this tank for chemicals or liquids denser than water. Use the Tank Sizing Calculator to confirm 550 gallons matches your demand, and the Tank Sizing Guide if you are still comparing vertical storage tank capacities.

Fittings and access

The tank comes configured with an 18-inch polyethylene manway carrying a 4-inch vent and a tie-down. That integral 4-inch vent matters in service: it prevents vacuum collapse on rapid draw-down and pressure build on fast fill, so size your pump rates with the vent capacity in mind. For plumbing, you get two factory bulkhead locations without drilling the tank: a 1-1/2 inch polypropylene eco-bulkhead and a 2-inch standard polypropylene bulkhead, both sealed with EPDM elastomer. That gives the installer a gravity-feed or pump-supply choice off the shelf, and the EPDM wetted seals are suited to potable and general water service. The tank also includes a 9 x 10 inch flat reinforced sidewall pad — a flat fitting area provided so you can field-add a bulkhead or level gauge without cutting into the curved wall. See the technical drawing on this page for fitting placement and elevations before you plumb the tank.

Foundation and acceptance

A vertical tank this size needs a level, fully supported base. Our guide on concrete pad sizing for above-ground polyethylene tanks walks through the ACI 360R-10 framework for sizing that pad to the loaded weight. Once the tank is set, follow our hydrostatic test methodology to fill in stages, watch for pad settlement, and check every fitting for leaks before the tank goes into service. If this tank is part of a rural fire-protection setup, the fire-water reservoir design guide covers NFPA 22 sizing and cold-climate freeze protection, and the industrial water reuse topology guide shows where a 550-gallon vertical tank fits in grey-water, rainwater, and HVAC condensate storage trains.
