Openings, the cover and the drain

• Bottom outlet: at the apex of the cone; specify the bulkhead fitting for the chemical when ordering, with a short flexible transition to the valve so the fitting carries no pipe weight.
• Top: open, with a 14 inch cover; a mixer bracket or a lid with a chemical chute mounts on the rim.
• Stand: the tank stands in a ring stand matched to the cone; it does not stand on its own.

A cover on a make-down tank is not optional: an open batch takes dust, and a light-sensitive chemical fades. The white wall shows the level through it, which is the point of a day tank. Set the stand in a spill tray, and label the tank so the fire inspector and the workplace inspector read the same thing. In a freezing climate keep the batch indoors or drain the apex valve between shifts.

Batching and changeover

Water in first, then the chemical, with the mixer running; a dense chemical added to water makes heat and the order keeps it in the tank rather than on the operator. When the batch is done, drain through the apex, rinse from the rim with a wand, drain again, and let it dry before the next chemical, because residue from the last product is the usual cause of a cloudy first batch. Log each batch with its date and strength.
