Bulk water on a wide pad, where nothing is allowed to stand tall

Who buys this one: an orchard or row-crop grower filling a spray rig and a drip header from the same tank, a municipality or district holding flushing and hydrant-test water at a yard, a ranch consolidating four smaller tanks into one vessel with one pad and one pump, a contractor running dust control on a long job, a plant holding process or wash water where the roof of an open-sided building is the limit. The common thread is that they need bulk water and cannot spend height on it, and 93 inches is the number that makes that possible. The 96 by 109 inch pair sit on a narrower base and stand better than a foot taller, which is the choice when the yard is tight and the sky is free, with the green SII-32569 at 427 lb and the black SII-32567 at 382 lb. The 102 by 97 inch 32781 shares this tank's base within a few inches and is listed at 350 lb, the lightest figure on the sheet, in a black straight wall. This one is the green wall on the widest base at the lowest height of the group, which is the combination a buyer wants when the tank must stay out of a sightline and out of daylight at the same time. Beside them, the 2600 gallon SII-WG62 gives up four hundred gallons on a narrower base, and the 3500 gallon SII-32294 stands 125 inches for a site that would rather add volume than floor. A 24 inch manway, a bolted outlet, and a pump that stays flooded

• The pump: 93 inches of shell puts a little under eight feet of water over the base, which is real suction head for a booster or transfer pump but only if the pump sits below the outlet. Put it low, on its own base, with a straight run before the first elbow, and the column primes it and keeps it flooded down to the last inches. A pump lifted to bench height on a tank this low throws away the only head the shape gives you.
• Prime and protection: a foot valve or check on the suction line where the pump must hold prime between calls, a cleanable strainer, and a float, probe or pressure switch that stops the pump with water still over the fitting. Where the tank feeds a spray rig filled in a hurry, that stop is what protects the pump from the operator.
• Outlet: a 2 inch polypropylene stainless steel bolted fitting at the base, as the sheet lists it. Keep a wrench path clear around the bolting, do not bury it, and re-torque after the first full fill and again after the first freeze-thaw season.
• Inlet: a 1-1/2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting for a hose or pressurised fill, which keeps a delivery out of the manway and stops a tanker driving air and debris into the top of the water.
• Access: a 24 inch threaded vented manway, the larger of the two manway sizes in this group, which is the one that makes a tank this wide genuinely cleanable; keep it closed, keep the vent clear, and never let a pump draw against a blocked vent.

On a wide, low tank the pipework wants more support than people give it, because the run from the base fitting to the pump is long and shallow and every elbow in it is a place for air to sit. Slope the suction line down to the pump, break the first joint with a flexible connector so thermal movement and pump starts do not land on the fitting, and carry the first valve on its own support off the pad. Winter protection goes on the valve and the exposed pipe, not on the body. And put a level reading where the operator stands, because 3000 gallons drawn from a 102 inch circle drops less than a hand's width per few hundred gallons and a wide tank hides its own level better than a tall one.

Irrigation, construction water and storage between reuse stages

The duties that fit a wide, low 3000 are the high-draw ones where the tank is a buffer between a slow source and a fast demand: filling a spray rig or a nurse trailer from a well that cannot keep up, holding irrigation water for a drip or micro-sprinkler block, dust control and compaction water on a construction job, hydrant flushing and main-testing water at a district yard, wash-down and equipment rinse water at a plant, stock water on a ranch where one pad replaced four tanks. The SII-WG73 ships from Merced, California at class 500 as the sheet lists it, crated at 102 inches by 102 inches by 93 inches, and it moves as an oversize load rather than as ordinary freight. Eight and a half feet across is wider than a trailer deck is meant to carry, so the route is part of the purchase: confirm the gate, the turn, the overhead lines and where the truck can stop, because a load this wide does not reverse out of a bad approach and a refused delivery is charged both ways.
