The Norwesco 3135 Gallon Horizontal Elliptical Leg Tank is a white polyethylene haul tank built for moving liquid down the road, not storing it in place. The elliptical cross-section rides low across an 88-inch-wide by 150-inch-long footprint and stands 80 inches tall, with molded legs that cradle the tank flat on a trailer or skid so the load stays low and stable. Rated to 1.5 specific gravity, this Norwesco horizontal leg tank is engineered to carry agricultural and industrial liquids that weigh more than water.

Will it work for your liquid?

Start with weight, because that is what governs your trailer and your axles. Filled with water, the 3135 gallons inside this tank weigh about 26,146 lbs. At the full 1.5 specific gravity rating, the contents alone can reach roughly 39,219 lbs. To check your own product against that ceiling: at 8.34 lbs per gallon for water, every 0.1 SG above 1.0 adds about 2,615 lbs to a full load, so a 1.3 SG product runs about 33,994 lbs of contents (well under the limit), while a 1.6 SG product would exceed it. Size your trailer and hitch to the loaded 1.5 SG total, not the water weight. Review the technical drawing on this page for leg spacing, fitting locations, and overall dimensions, and run the numbers with the Tank Sizing Calculator and Tank Sizing Guide before you commit.

Chemical compatibility

This tank is molded from polyethylene and carries a 1.5 specific gravity rating. The resin is listed as HDLPE but is not yet confirmed at the model level. Confirm HDLPE versus XLPE with us before chemical service: HDLPE handles the listed water, fertilizer, and ag duty, while XLPE is the resin you want for aggressive oxidizers. Compatibility below is drawn from the OEM chemical-resistance chart, which is concentration- and temperature-specific, so verify your exact concentration and operating temperature against that chart before you commit a product.

At this tank's 1.5 SG rating, the following are listed as compatible at the noted concentrations, with the fitting and gasket materials each requires:

Most of these services run PVC fittings with EPDM gaskets, but the bill of materials is chemical-specific: DEF calls for 316SS fittings, and acetic acid and urea solution shift to PP/PVC, so confirm fittings and gaskets per service before ordering. Note that DEF and urea solution above are listed against this tank's 1.5 SG rating. Other chemicals listed against this resin need a heavier tank: Ethylene Glycol, Ferric Chloride, Ferric Sulfate, Hydrochloric Acid, Hydrofluoric Acid, Hydrofluosilicic Acid, Hydrogen Peroxide, Peracetic Acid, Phosphoric Acid, Polyaluminum Chloride, Potassium Carbonate, Potassium Hydroxide, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Bisulfate, Sodium Bisulfite, Sodium Hypochlorite, Sodium Thiosulfate, Sulfuric Acid, and Zinc Orthophosphate all call for a 1.9 specific gravity tank, not this 1.5 SG model. If your service is on that list (Sulfuric Acid, Sodium Hypochlorite, Ferric Chloride, Hydrochloric Acid, and 15 others), this tank is under-spec; call us for the 1.9 SG equivalent in this size class. See the full chemical compatibility reference for fitting and gasket detail by chemical.

The mistake to avoid

The trap on a leg tank this large is specifying by gallons and forgetting density. The 1.5 SG rating is the ceiling: it lets you carry liquids up to one-and-a-half times the weight of water, but a denser product, or one that belongs on the 1.9 SG list above, will overload the wall and your axles even when the tank looks half full. Confirm the resin (HDLPE versus XLPE) before chemical service, match your product's actual concentration and temperature to the OEM chart, and size your trailer to the 1.5 SG loaded weight. For background on how these tanks are classified and hauled, read our guides on Norwesco applicator and leg tanks for fertilizer, DOT classification for farm-fleet use, and fertilizer-blend tank stratification.

On a tank this size, LTL freight is a large share of freight cost, and shipping from the nearest of six Norwesco plants is what keeps that number down. This tank ships LTL freight, quoted live to your ZIP from the closest of Fairfield, TX; Griffin, GA; Lancaster, OH; Shawnee, OK; St. Bonifacius, MN; and Tooele, UT. Get your number with the Freight Cost Estimator or call 866-418-1777 to confirm the right tank and the closest shipping point for your build.
