Where 4200 gallons goes
This is a tank for a ranch water system, a rural fire reserve, a rainwater system on a large roof, an irrigation buffer, or a plant that takes liquid by the tanker load. At 102 inches across and 131 inches tall, the manway sits almost eleven feet up and the full tank weighs more than seventeen tons, so two things are settled before the order: a flat, level, continuous pad sized for that weight, and a fixed ladder or platform for whoever fills and inspects it. Openings and fittings
- Outlet. A 3 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting with a 2 inch reducer, factory installed low in the sidewall. Leave the reducer in for 2 inch pipe and a 2 inch valve; take it out for a 3 inch valve where you want the faster drain or a pump that needs the bigger suction. On a tank this size the 3 inch run is usually the better choice. Support the valve and the first length of pipe on their own so the fitting carries liquid, not hardware.
- Manway. A 16 inch threaded vented manway on top for the fill line, a float switch and cleaning. The vent has to pass the air that moves with the liquid; keep it clear, especially on a tank filled from a tanker.
- Liquid and temperature. At or below 1.5 specific gravity and at or below 120 F. Check anything other than water against polyethylene before the first fill.
