Who buys the 1,300 at a 1.5 rating

The duty comes first on this one. This is the tank a food or beverage plant puts on a clean-in-place skid, a co-op fills with a light liquid fertilizer solution, a laundry or bottling plant stands beside a wash line, and a treatment plant uses as a day tank between a tanker delivery and the dosing pumps. What they have in common is a liquid that is close to water in weight and sometimes warm, and a delivery that arrives by truck and has to go somewhere in one drop. A 1,300 gallon tank takes most of a small tanker load without a second vessel, and because the sheet lists this wall to 140 F / 60 C it takes it warm rather than waiting for it to cool. Under the tank, the pad does all the work: plain water alone puts 10,842 pounds inside the shell and the 1.5 rating allows 16,263 pounds, and a rotationally molded floor bears on its whole floor and on nothing else, so all of that load lands on a 72 inch circle. Four walls are molded in this one shell, so the footprint, the height and the manway are identical across the top four rows and the choice between them is a chemistry, a light and a temperature question. This is the white tank at the lighter rating, and it is the buy when the liquid is near the weight of water and the operator wants to see the level through the wall; each of the others is rated as its own sheet says. The two listed as heavy duty carry more wall and more weight for a denser load. The two black ones keep light out of a liquid that fades or grows. Beyond the shell, the 1830200N40 stands 1,200 gallons on a narrower base and goes nine feet up for a site short of floor, and the 1770000C34 lays 1,500 gallons out on an 86 inch base at 72 inches tall for a room with a low ceiling and a wide pad.

Pump, prime, and the manway above it

• Pump first, because on a day tank the pump is the whole point: mount the transfer pump below the base of the tank so seven feet of standing liquid keeps it flooded and it primes on gravity rather than on a hand valve and a prayer. Put a low-level float or probe on the tank wired to stop the pump before it draws air, and a strainer ahead of the suction so nothing that settled out of a tanker load reaches an impeller.
• Outlet: the sheet gives the outlet as "1 Manway / Lid" and lists no bottom fitting size at all. We print that as it stands rather than guess a bulkhead diameter. Tell us the liquid and the draw-off arrangement you want at order and we confirm what this molding accepts, in what material, before anything is cut.
• Listed opening: an 18 inch threaded, vented manway at the top of an 87 inch shell. That is overhead work, so a fixed platform with a rail or a tied-off platform ladder, and a permanent fill line landed at the manway instead of a driver lifting a hose over his head.
• Fill and vent: a dip tube to the floor so the incoming stream does not free-fall the height of the tank and foam, the vent piped outdoors on anything that fumes, and the vent sized to the delivery pump rather than to the nearest port.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C. Warranty: 3 year. Rating: specific gravity 1.5 as the sheet gives it.

Whatever the pump hangs off is carried on its own support off the pad, with a flexible connector between the tank and hard pipe, because a rigid run bolted to the shell feeds every bit of thermal movement and every pump pulse back into the wall, and a warm liquid moves the wall more than a cold one does. Pipe alignment that looked square cold will not be square hot, so leave the flexible section slack rather than stretched. Between deliveries the manway stays threaded shut, the wall carries the name of the one liquid inside in letters a driver reads from the cab, and the band of wall above the liquid line gets a light every time the cover comes off.

Warm-side duties that arrive by the truck

Clean-in-place solution at a dairy or brewery, hot rinse water makeup at a laundry, a light liquid fertilizer solution at a co-op, a bulk surfactant or process water tank at a plant whose supply arrives warm, and a day tank ahead of a dosing train. Water at 8.34 pounds per gallon sits far inside the rating, but a private fire reserve is a different specification in a water-rated vessel with its own inlet, outlet and freeze arrangements, which the fire-water reservoir design guide sets out plainly, so read that before this tank is bought for that job.

The sheet gives class 300 and 290 pounds shipping weight from Chowchilla, California, a West Coast origin that reaches a California or Nevada dock on a short lane and prices further out on the deck space the shell occupies rather than on the scale; run your ZIP through the freight cost estimator before the requisition goes in, and the listed price is before freight. Two people and a pallet jack take 290 pounds off the trailer, straps under the body and never a sling through the manway, and the tank sets down on the cured pad rather than on gravel it will have to be dragged off later. Then water: fill it to the manway, hold it, walk the base and the pad edge twice looking for movement or a weep, and drain and dry it before the working liquid arrives. On a tank bought for its temperature rating, do that first fill cold, because a cold test finds a pad problem cheaply and a warm one finds it expensively.
