Four tanks at 260 pounds; why the N48

The sheet lists four tanks in this shell at the same 260 pounds: the C34, the N42, the N51 and this one, and it does not explain the suffixes, so we do not either. What the sheet does say is the rating. This tank is rated 1.9, the heavy chemical wall, for concentrated acid, ferric and the dense brines; each of the other three is rated as its own sheet says. So the choice inside the shell is the liquid: dense, and this is the tank. The choice between shells is the roof. The 1840000 tanks stack 1,550 gallons on a 64 inch circle at 124 inches for a site with height and no floor; this shell lays 1,500 gallons out on an 86 inch circle at six feet for a chemical room with a low ceiling, a lean-to, or a spot under a mezzanine. A low, wide tank has the lowest center of gravity in the family and the least need for strapping, but it is strapped anyway, because a black tank grows in the sun. Full at the rating it puts 23,769 pounds on an 86 inch circle, and a rotationally molded floor bears on the whole pad, so the slab is engineered per the concrete pad sizing guide, level and in full contact, inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated. Black polyethylene passes no light to the liquid, runs warmer than white, and hides the level, so a sender read at the ground is the gauge. Check 1,500 gallons against the dosing rate and the truck schedule in the tank sizing calculator, and take the reserve and the thermal freeboard from the tank sizing guide.

The 1770000 shell and its two neighbors

Four tanks, one weight, one shell; the rating on each sheet is the only way to tell them apart, and this page cites its own. The 1830400N40 holds 1,300 gallons on a six foot circle at 87 inches, fifteen inches taller and fourteen inches narrower, for a site that is short of floor; the 1840000C26 holds 1,550 gallons on a 64 inch circle at 124 inches for a site that has height to spare.

Fill and vent on a tank you can reach from the ground

• Vent and fill: an 18 inch threaded, vented manway at six feet, opened without a ladder. That convenience is the hazard: a tank this easy to open gets filled over the rim, and a dense liquid poured over the rim splashes the headspace wall and the person filling it. Fill down a dip tube to the floor. The lid vent breathes a gravity fill; a pump moves air out faster than it passes, so size the vent to the pump or open the lid for the fill with someone at it. Screen the vent, and run it outdoors on a liquid that fumes.
• Headspace: a wide tank has a big liquid surface and a shallow headspace, so the shoulder comes up fast; stop the fill there, and inspect the band of wall above the liquid line with a light at every opening.
• Outlet: the outlet field on the sheet reads 15, and we print it as the sheet gives it. Name the liquid at order and the bulkhead fitting, gasket and bolting are matched to it, with a flexible connector to hard pipe and the first valve supported off the pad.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C.

Six feet of head is the least in the family, so the pump on this tank goes below the outlet where gravity primes it, with a low-level float so it stops before it draws air; a self-priming pump at floor level is the alternative when the outlet cannot sit above the pump. Keep the lid shut between deliveries, name the one chemical on the wall, and look at the vent screen when the lid comes off. Where winters freeze, the valve and the first pipe run get trace heat or insulation; the body ices from the top down.

Low chemical rooms and day tanks

A day tank for ferric or another dense coagulant beside the dosing pumps at a water plant, acid at a plating line under a mezzanine, brine at a food plant, and a dense fertilizer solution at a co-op with a low shed. A forklift with long forks sets 260 pounds on the pad with the forks under the body, never through the manway, and the straps go on the same day. Fill it with water to the shoulder once and hold it, watching the pad edge and the base fitting for a weep, then drain and dry before the chemical arrives.
