Tanker-load buyers who have floor and no height

The duty here is bulk, not day storage. At 1,500 gallons the delivery is a real tanker drop, which is how a plating shop, a metal finisher, a food plant or a municipal treatment plant gets its best price on a dense chemical, and it is why this tank shows up in buildings that already had a smaller one. What it costs is floor. A seven foot two inch circle carrying 23,769 pounds bears on the whole footprint the way a molded floor does, so the slab is engineered per the concrete pad sizing guide, level and in full contact, with a berm sized to 110 percent of the tank where the liquid is regulated. Get that slab flat: a dense liquid in a wide, shallow tank concentrates every unevenness into the floor and the base fitting. Strap it to structure while it is empty in any building where a forklift works, and check the straps after the first hot week, because a black tank grows in the sun and loosens what was tight. Black polyethylene passes no light to the liquid, ages better than white outdoors, runs warmer, and hides the level, so a sight tube or a sender is the gauge. One molding, four part numbers, and two taller options

The top four rows are the same molding at the same 260 pounds; nothing on the outside separates them and the sheet separates them by resin, color and rating only. This C34 is the black one rated 1.9 on its own sheet, and it is the buy when the specification asks for a heavy rating and a dark wall and does not call out a cross-linked or ASTM resin by name; where it does, the N42, N48 and N51 are the part numbers to look at, each rated as its own sheet says. The last two rows are the height trade. The 1830400N40 gives up some capacity to sit on a six foot circle at seven feet three inches, and the 1840000C26 holds 1,550 on a five foot four inch circle at ten feet four inches, which buys back a lot of floor and costs a platform at the top.

Pump suction at the base, and the opening the sheet does not name

• Pump and suction: six feet of a 1.9 liquid over a 2 inch outlet is a genuine flooded suction, and it is the reason this tank feeds a transfer pump well. Set the pump below the outlet, keep the suction run short and full bore, and it stays primed to the last few inches. A dense liquid doubles the penalty for every foot the pump sits above the outlet, so a pump on a stand beside the tank is the wrong install even though it looks tidier.
• Low-level protection: a float or level switch stops the pump before it draws air, and on a black wall it is the only thing that does, because nobody can see the level through this tank. Set it above the fitting, not at it.
• Outlet: 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, with a single flange line noted on the sheet. Name the liquid at order and the fitting, gasket and bolting are matched to it, with a flexible connector between the bulkhead and hard pipe, and the first valve carried on its own support off the pad.
• Access and venting: the sheet gives no lid or manway field for this part number. Tell us at order how the tank will be filled and how fast it will be drawn down and the top opening is specified to that duty. A tanker pump moves air faster than a lid vent passes it, and a pump drawing down a sealed tank pulls a vacuum, so the venting is sized to the faster of the two events, not to the tank. Two habits pay for themselves on a bulk chemical tank. Inspect the band of wall above the liquid line with a light every time the top is open, because that is where a tank shows trouble first. And where it freezes, trace or insulate the valve and the first pipe run; the body takes ice from the top down, while a dense liquid in a small line does not.

Coagulant bulk storage and heavy brine

Ferric and the other dense coagulants at a water or wastewater plant that buys by the tanker, brine at a food plant, concentrated acid at a plating shop under a lean-to, and a heavy fertilizer solution at a co-op that wants it out of the light. Drain and dry before the chemical arrives, and keep that water bill; it is worth less than one tanker load of anything else. Check the strap tension a week after the first fill; a tank settles a little, and the strap that was tight is loose.
