Acid grade plus containment

A tank sold for sulfuric acid is built and fitted for the acid's density and its exotherm, with fittings chosen for the acid rather than for general service; confirm the concentration you buy against the chemical compatibility database, because sulfuric at different strengths behaves as different chemicals. Never add water to a tank that holds acid; the fill order is water first, acid second. Grades on the 102 x 103 inch double wall

The N45 is the general chemical grade in the same shell at the same weight, for caustic, ferric and alum; the N48 is a lighter general grade at 900 pounds. Openings, instruments, interstice

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway on the primary, a short step up at 103 inches; vent it outside through a line the acid mist cannot corrode, and fill through a dip tube to the floor.
• Outlet: through both walls together, with an acid-rated transition supported off the floor; specify the fitting when ordering.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C; a tank that receives acid warm from a tanker or from dilution is watched against that limit.

A non-contact radar sender on the manway is the usual level answer for sulfuric, since wetted parts rule out most standard senders. The interstitial space is the leak alarm: a float or conductivity switch, a look into the port each shift, a logged check each week, and anything found there takes the tank out of service that day.
