Where it goes

A 47 inch square is about two drums' worth of floor, and 63 inches of height puts the lid within a comfortable reach from a low step. Put the tank where the drain pans and the recycler's hose actually reach: beside the drain bench, within reach of the pit, or where the collection truck can get a hose to it without being walked through the shop. The base wants flat, continuous, level support across its whole area; 200 lb empty is a pallet jack job, but 2,294 lb of liquid stands on that square once it is full, and a polyethylene floor bearing on a high spot cracks before it wears out. What goes in it, and what does not

Used engine oil, gear oil and hydraulic oil from vehicle and truck service bays, fleet and municipal garages, farm and construction equipment shops, marinas and quick lube sites. Keep solvents, fuel, antifreeze and brake cleaner out of it: they thin the oil, they can be a problem for the recycler, and a tank of mixed waste costs more to dispose of than a tank of oil. Let hot drain oil cool in the pan before it goes in, and keep the lid closed between fills so rain and shop debris stay out; water in used oil is the usual reason a recycler refuses a load. Handling and disposal are governed by your own regulator and your collector, and their requirements decide the arrangement; the tank is one component inside it.
