The low acid tank

Concentrated sulfuric acid weighs nearly twice what water does and attacks the wall of an ordinary linear polyethylene tank from the inside, at the surface and in the vapor space above the liquid; Snyder's N30 resin is compounded for that service, so the tank is sized for the acid's weight and its chemistry together, and this is the shape for a chemical room with a low ceiling. Full, it puts 47,538 pounds on a 102 inch circle at the rating, which sits low enough to need the least strapping in its class: a slab in full contact under the whole floor, inside a berm sized to the tank, with the eyewash and the shower within reach of the unloading point. The 5090000N30 is the sulfuric resin at 2,500 gallons on a 90 inch base, 11 inches taller and heavier in the wall, for a smaller pad. The 7360000N52 is the opaque chemical tank at 4,100 gallons on this same 102 inch base at 130 inches, for the light-sensitive chemicals rather than acid.

Openings as shipped

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 96 inches up; fill through a dip tube, vent to a scrubber or outdoors, never into a room, and size the vent for the delivery pump.
• Outlet: specify an acid-rated bulkhead fitting and gasket when ordering; a flanged transition and a valve supported off the slab.

Choose a level sender rated for concentrated acid and read it at ground level. Acid draws water from the air and heats when it does, so the manway stays closed and the vent carries a drying trap. Never add water to the tank; dilution is done elsewhere, water first.

The first fill from the truck

A delivery truck's pump can push air out faster than a stock vent can pass it, so the vent is sized for the unload rate or the fill goes through a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent line. The fill pipe runs to the floor so the acid does not free-fall and fume. The first load into a new tank gets watched end to end, eyes on the slab edge and the outlet fitting while the level comes up, and each delivery after it is logged with its date and strength.

In service

Sulfuric acid for pH control at a water or wastewater plant with a low chemical room, regeneration acid at a demineralizer, pickling and plating acid at shop scale, and any vessel of concentrated acid under eight feet of roof; with water in it, a fire reserve of the kind the fire-water reservoir design guide describes, though a tank bought in this resin is bought for acid. Freight and unloading

At 102 inches across the 7410000N30 ships as oversize freight at a lane rate rather than a class rate; the freight cost estimator quotes the haul to your ZIP; what is listed is the price before freight. A forklift with long forks sets 520 pounds on the slab. Water-fill it once to the manway, hold it, then drain and dry completely before the first acid delivery; water left in an acid tank is the first mistake. Mark the vent and the outlet on the outside of the shell so nobody caps the wrong one in the dark.
