A dense liquid duty that has to stay under nine feet

Two constraints usually arrive together on this one: the liquid is heavy and the room is short. A plating line in a leased bay, a fluid shed at a drilling yard, a mine laboratory or reagent room, a treatment plant with a dense coagulant and a low chemical building. At 97 inches the shell clears sprinkler lines and duct runs that a ten or eleven foot tank fouls, and at the 1.9 rating the sheet allows 41,992 pounds of contents where plain water in the same 2,650 gallons is 22,101 pounds. That is the whole case for paying for this wall rather than a lighter one in the same envelope. The delivery is usually a tote transfer or a small truck rather than a tanker, repeated often, so the manway at 97 inches gets opened a lot and is worth guarding with a proper ladder and a grab rail. The ground still carries all of it. A rotationally molded floor bears on its whole floor and nothing else, so the load sits on that 102 inch circle and the slab is engineered per the concrete pad engineering guide, level and in full contact, inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated. A wide shell only 97 inches tall is the least wind-sensitive shape here, but 800 pounds of empty tank still gets banded to structure or to slab anchors the day it lands. Black keeps light out of the liquid and takes the ultraviolet that ages a pale shell on an outdoor pad, at the cost of hiding the level, so a sender goes in with the tank. The 8390000 shell in four walls

Four tanks share the 102 x 97 inch envelope and the empty weight column tells you what separates them: 800 pounds here against 510 for each of the three C walls, which are rated as their own sheets say. That extra wall is the product. The 8390000N46 is the lighter N wall in the same shell for a duty inside its rating. Off the shell, the 5090000C26 holds 2,500 gallons on a narrower 90 inch base at 107 inches for a tighter floor, and the 5130000C34 steps the volume up to 3,000 gallons at 127 inches for a room with more height than this one assumes.

Eight feet of head and the pump under it

• Pump: 97 inches is the shortest column in this batch, which makes pump elevation the single most important line on the install drawing. The pump goes below the tank floor for a flooded suction, sized on the real dense fluid and not on water, with the shortest suction leg the pad allows and as few elbows as the pipe fitter will accept.
• Low-level protection: a float wired to stop the pump on level before it draws air. A dense liquid punishes a dry run harder than water does, and the seal is worth more than the float ten times over.
• Draw-off: the sheet lists the outlet as 13.5 and names no bulkhead size, material or thread, so the draw-off is specified at order against the liquid, then given a flexible connector to hard pipe and a first valve on its own support off the pad.
• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway at 97 inches, low enough for a fixed ladder and a grab rail; dip tube to the floor for the fill, vent outdoors and sized to whatever pumps into it.
• Structure: 1 flange line and no lug count listed on this sheet, so the tank is lifted with straps under the body.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C.

A short tank full of a heavy liquid is a pump problem wearing a tank's clothes. There is not much head to work with, the fluid is denser than the pump curve was drawn for, and the last foot of the draw is where the trouble shows up, so the elevation, the float and the fluid-specific pump selection all belong in the drawing before anything is ordered. The rest is habit: manway closed between deliveries, the name of the one liquid painted on the wall where a driver reads it before he couples up, and a light on the band above the liquid line at every opening. Where the site freezes, trace or wrap the valve and the first pipe run, never the shell.

Plating lines, brine, and drilling fluid

Plating and anodizing baths, brine and pickle liquor, weighted drilling and completions fluid, mine reagent make-up, a dense coagulant at a water plant. Keep one spare gasket for whatever draw-off fitting you specify on the shelf from day one, because that is the part that fails on a holiday weekend.
