A tanker of dense chemical, out of the light

Light drives the breakdown of hypochlorite, of some coagulants and of most of the organic chemicals a plant stores, and it grows algae in anything wet; a standard white wall lets some of it through, a black wall lets none through and hides the level, and the opaque white is the compromise Snyder molds for chemical service, dark inside and readable outside. On top of that the 1.9 wall is sized for a liquid nearly twice as dense as water, so the dense coagulants and acids are covered as well as the light-sensitive ones. Ports and paperwork

• Outlet: 2 inch; a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab, in the material the chemical calls for.
• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 130 inches up; on acid or caustic the vent goes outdoors, the fill goes down a dip tube, and the vent is sized to the tanker pump.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

Choose the level sender for the chemical with the level gauge selection guide, read at ground level so nobody climbs for a number; an opaque wall shows a shadow line in daylight, not a number. Hypochlorite and coagulants stratify and degrade, so a sample from the top of the tank is not the tank; the tank chemical sampling protocol covers where and how often to draw one that means something. Keep the manway closed against vapor loss. In a cold climate the outlet valve and the first run of pipe are insulated or drained.

Bringing in a load

A tanker unloads faster than the manway can breathe, so the vent is sized for the pump or the fill takes a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent. A fill pipe to the floor keeps caustic or coagulant from free-falling and foaming. A dense liquid heats when water is added to it, so a batch tank is filled with water before the chemical, never after. The first tanker into a new tank is a supervised job, slab edge and outlet fitting checked as it fills, and each delivery after it is logged with its date and strength; for hypochlorite the log is also the turnover schedule.

Rotation and rinse

Size the refill schedule so the tank turns over before the chemical degrades, which for hypochlorite means buying in smaller lots more often through the summer. At changeover, drain through the outlet, rinse through the manway with a wand, drain again, and let it dry before the new fill, because residue from the last product is the usual cause of a cloudy first batch.

Sodium hypochlorite and light-sensitive coagulants at a water or wastewater plant, ferric and other dense coagulants at a plant with a berm, dense process chemicals delivered by tanker where the plant wants the level readable and the chemical dark, and any regulated liquid where the label, the sample and the level all have to satisfy an inspector.
