Tiedown lugs before the wind gets a chance

A tank better than fifteen feet tall on a circle seven and a half feet across has the highest centre of gravity in this size class, so on this one the anchoring is designed before the pad is poured rather than added after it. The sheet lists four tiedown lugs, which is the manufacturer telling you where the load goes: cables or bands from those lugs to structure or to anchors set in the slab, tight before the first fill, checked after the first windy week and again after the first full summer, because black polyethylene grows in the sun and the strap that was tight in spring is slack in August. The window nobody plans for is the one between delivery and first fill, when an empty tank at 1,450 pounds with fifteen feet of wall is a sail. The reward for all of that is the footprint: a 90 inch circle goes behind a building, between two vessels that are already there, or down a chemical alley a wide tank would block. Full at the rating there are 69,722 pounds on that circle, which is a heavier load per square foot than any wide tank in this size carries, so the slab is engineered to the framework in the concrete pad sizing guide, level and in full contact, sized for the rated case rather than the 36,696 pound water case, inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated. Measure the clearance above the manway as well: 182 inches plus a platform, a fill line and a vent is the real height this tank asks for. Inside this shell the split is weight and grade. This tank and the N42 are both listed at 1,450 pounds where the N40 and N46 are listed at 1,100, which is the sheet's own record of how much more wall the heavier tanks carry, and we print what it says. Take this one when the liquid is heavier than water and the floor is the thing you do not have: the 1.9 rating is what it is for, and nothing else on this list is rated as heavy. The N42, N40 and N46 are the cross-linked grades in the same 90 by 182 inch shell, each rated as its own sheet says, with the N46 black for a load that light spoils. If the constraint flips and the roof becomes the problem, the 7421100C34 puts 4,300 gallons on a 120 inch base at 104 inches and the 7000400N29 lays 4,500 gallons down to 91 inches on a 143 inch base, both far easier to receive and both wanting a great deal more floor.

Better than fifteen feet of liquid standing above the base is the most suction head in this size, and it cuts both ways. A transfer pump set below the outlet runs flooded to the last few inches and empties the tank in a shift, which is the upside. The downside is that the same head sits on the fitting, the first valve and the first joint all day, every day, and with a dense liquid at 69,722 pounds it sits harder than water would. So the connector to hard pipe is flexible, the first valve rides on its own support off the pad, nothing rigid bolts to the wall, and one spare gasket for whatever fitting is specified lives on the shelf. A low level float stops the pump before it pulls air. Keep the manway closed between deliveries, name the one liquid on the wall in letters readable from the gate, and put a light on the band of wall above the liquid line at every opening, because on a tank this tall that band is the part nobody sees from the ground. Where the site freezes, trace or wrap the valve and the first pipe run; the body ices from the top down without harm.

Heavy liquid where there is no floor to spare

This tank lands on crowded sites: a treatment plant squeezing a dense coagulant tank between two that are already installed, a plating or metal finishing shop with a narrow chemical alley and a tall bay, a mineral or food processor on a concentrated process liquid, a co-op putting a heavy blend behind the warehouse rather than in front of it. The 1.9 rating and the 90 inch circle are the two reasons it is there, and neither of them is about volume. Lincoln to the pad, fifteen feet on the deck

The 5210000N51 is molded at Lincoln, Nebraska and moves as freight at class 300 as the sheet lists it, shipping at 90 inches by 90 inches by 182 inches. At better than fifteen feet long on the deck it rides as a permitted load, and the route matters as much as the rate: walk the gate, the turn into the pad and the overhead lines before delivery day, because a load this long does not reverse out of a bad approach.
