4,500 gallons in black at just under twelve feet, rated 1.5

Between the low 4,500 and the slim one sits the Snyder 7420000C37-BLACK: 102 inches across, 142 inches tall, 4,500 gallons, 900 pounds empty, a black polyethylene tank on an eight and a half foot circle with the 18 inch threaded, vented manway at eleven feet ten inches. The wall is rated for a specific gravity of 1.5 on the sheet, or 56,295 pounds of contents against 37,530 pounds for water, and the black resin keeps light off the load. A 3 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead outlet, a 3 year warranty, and freight at class 300 from Chowchilla, California or Lincoln, Nebraska.

The middle height, on a pad that fits behind a building

Most sites are neither wide open nor tall, and this is the 4,500 for those. An eight and a half foot circle fits the strip of ground beside a chemical building, and just under twelve feet of height clears the roof most of them were built with; the low 4,500s need a twelve foot circle and the slim one needs fifteen feet of headroom. Strap it before the first fill, to structure at the top third, and check the tension after the first windy week and the first full summer, because a black tank in the sun grows and loosens what was tight. Full at the rating it puts 56,295 pounds on a 102 inch circle, and a rotationally molded floor bears on all of it, so the slab is engineered per the concrete pad sizing guide, level and in full contact, inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated. Black polyethylene absorbs the ultraviolet that ages a white wall and passes no light to the liquid; it runs warmer than white in the sun, so shade if the chemical must stay cool, and it hides the level, so a sender read at the ground is the gauge. Whether 4,500 gallons covers the draw between deliveries is a question for the tank sizing calculator; the reserve to hold back and the headspace a warm liquid needs are in the tank sizing guide.

Low, middle and slim: the 4,400 to 4,600 gallon tanks

The 7000400 tanks lay the same 4,500 gallons down to 91 inches on a base the sheet lists at 143 inches, in the other chemical walls, the N33 and N32 black; they are the buy under an eight foot roof with a twelve foot circle to spare, each rated as its own sheet says. The 5210000N40 stands 4,400 gallons on a 90 inch base at 182 inches, fifteen feet, for the narrowest pad and the tallest bay, and the 7000500N40 puts 4,600 gallons on a ten foot base at 116 inches. This tank is the one when the site is the strip beside the building and the roof is ordinary.

One 3 inch outlet, twelve feet of head

  • Outlet: 3 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, at the base. Name the liquid at order and the fitting, gasket and bolting are matched to it; a flanged transition, a flexible connector to hard pipe, and the first valve supported off the pad.
  • Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 142 inches up; a platform with a rail for anyone who opens it; a dip tube to the floor for the fill; a vent run outdoors on a liquid that fumes and sized to the delivery pump.
  • Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

Twelve feet of liquid over a 3 inch outlet keeps a transfer pump flooded to the last few inches and drains the tank in a shift; put the pump below the outlet so gravity primes it, and fit a low-level float so it stops before it draws air. The bulkhead is a single nut behind the wall, which is why the pipe run must not load it: the flexible connector takes the movement and the supported valve takes the weight. The manway stays closed between deliveries, the wall names the one chemical inside, and the headspace band gets a light at every opening. Where it freezes, the valve and the first pipe run get trace heat or insulation; the body takes ice from the top down without harm.

Sun and a small yard

A water plant with hypochlorite on the strip beside the chemical building, a co-op with a fertilizer solution behind the warehouse, and an industrial plant that stores a light-sensitive process chemical outdoors and has an ordinary roof to put it under. It is a chemical wall, not the tank the fire-water reservoir design guide describes for a fire reserve, though water is well inside its rating. Where a reuse system doses a treatment chemical between its storage stages, the industrial water reuse tank topology article shows where a tank this size belongs.

Chowchilla or Lincoln, class 300

The 7420000C37-BLACK ships from Chowchilla, California or Lincoln, Nebraska, whichever is nearer, as freight at class 300 as the sheet lists it; at 102 inches across and 142 inches long on the deck it is a permitted load, and the freight cost estimator prices the lane to your ZIP, with the listed price before freight. A crane or a forklift with long forks sets 900 pounds on the pad with straps under the body, never through the manway. Fill it with water to the manway once and hold it, watching the pad edge and the outlet fitting, then drain and dry before the chemical goes in. Look at the strap tension a week after the first fill; a tank settles a little, and the strap that was tight is loose. Walk the base after the first hard rain; a pad that shifts shows it at the edge first.
