The wastewater plant's dense-chemical tank

Wastewater plants dosing ferric chloride, ferric sulfate or alum for phosphorus and solids buy this tank, and the delivery that fills it is a partial drop: a tanker splits its load between two or three plants on a route, the driver's pump runs for half an hour, and the tank has to take whatever share was ordered without the operator on a ladder. That is why the heavy-duty wall matters more than the volume. The plant that buys this one usually has a narrow chemical room, because the 102 inch base is the smallest Snyder puts 4,500 gallons on. Full of water the tank puts 37,530 pounds on that base, and full at the rating 71,307, nearly thirty-six tons on a circle eight and a half feet across, the heaviest load per square foot in this batch; the slab is engineered per the concrete pad sizing guide, poured level and in full contact, inside a berm sized to 110 percent of the tank, which for a coagulant is required rather than advised. Nearly twelve feet tall on that small base, the empty tank is strapped to structure before the first drop. Natural white polyethylene shows the liquid line in daylight, so the operator reads the level from the door and confirms what the sender says. Heavy duty against standard, slim against wide

The standard-wall tank in this same shell is the 7420000N40 at 900 pounds, and it is the right buy for hypochlorite, thin solutions and water; this heavy-duty grade is the one when the liquid is dense. The 7000400 tanks lay 4,500 gallons down to 91 inches on a 143 inch base at the 1.35 rating, in white or black, for a low roof and a light liquid. The 5210000N40 stands 4,400 gallons on a 90 inch base at 182 inches for the tightest floor, and the 7000500N40 puts 4,600 gallons on a ten foot base at 116 inches, both in the standard wall.

Suction head for a coagulant metering pump

• Outlet: the sheet's outlet field reads 23, and we print it as given; tell us the coagulant at order and the fitting size, gasket and bolting are confirmed for it, with a flanged transition, a flexible connector to hard pipe, and the first valve carried on its own support in the material the chemical calls for.
• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 142 inches up, opened from a platform with a rail; fill through a dip tube to the floor, vent outdoors, and size the vent to the tanker's pump.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C.

A dense liquid gives a metering pump more suction head per foot of tank than water does, and nearly twelve feet of coagulant above the outlet is a strong flooded suction, which is what a diaphragm pump wants: mount it below the outlet on the containment floor, keep the suction line short and rising toward the pump with no pocket to hold gas, and it will hold its prime for the life of the check valves. A coagulant also gives off a little gas as it sits, so a calibration column and a bleed at the pump head save the operator from chasing a lost prime on a Monday. Fit a low-level float wired to the pump, set high enough that the pump stops before the last inches, where the sediment a coagulant drops collects; a back-pressure valve on the discharge keeps the dose honest when the tank is full and the head is highest. The manway stays closed between drops, the wall carries the chemical's name, and the headspace band gets a light at every opening, because that is where a wall shows trouble first. Where it freezes, trace the outlet valve and the first pipe run; the body ices from the top down without harm.

Where 1.9 is the whole point

Coagulant at a wastewater plant, acid at strength for pH control at an industrial plant, a dense brine at a food plant, and any chemical the standard wall in this shell is not rated for. The acceptance fill is water to the manway, held long enough to watch the pad edge and the outlet fitting, then drained and dried before the first coagulant, and nobody leaves the pad during that first drop. Put the part number and the rating on the maintenance log the day it lands, because five years on, nobody remembers which grade the white tank in the corner is.
