The duty: mid-height storage for a light chemical

What the pump sees on the 1.5 wall

• Suction: this sheet's outlet field reads 1 Manway / Lid, with no bottom fitting size given, so the draw-off is engineered at order. Name the liquid, the flow and the pipe material, take the flexible connector between bulkhead and hard pipe, and stand the first valve on its own support so pipe strain never reaches the shell.
• Prime: set the pump below the outlet with a short, straight suction line, and the 158 inch column keeps it flooded through most of the drawdown without a foot valve to stick.
• Low level: a low-level cutout that stops the pump, set with margin and proved once during commissioning, is worth more than an alarm nobody hears. On a sanitizer or a wash solution the pump is usually the most expensive thing in the loop.
• Recirculation: a light solution standing for weeks in 6,600 gallons is better served by a small pumped loop off a tee on the suction line than by anything mechanical dropped through the 18 inch top.
• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, with ladder lugs molded in for a fixed ladder. Fill through a dip tube to the floor, and run the vent outdoors, sized to the delivery pump.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C.

Two flange lines are molded into the shell for side connections, and the eight lifting lugs exist for the pick and nothing else. Size the vent to the tanker's pump rather than to the pipe already on site, because air has to leave the headspace as fast as liquid enters it and this shell is not a pressure vessel. Everything else is the routine that keeps a light-duty tank boring: manway closed between deliveries, one liquid named in paint on the wall, a light on the band above the liquid line whenever the lid is off, and trace heat or insulation on the valve and the first pipe run where winters freeze while the body ices from the top down.
