Why black, and what 1,450 pounds buys
Carbon black is the most effective ultraviolet stabilizer polyethylene has, and it is opaque, so a black tank protects both the wall and the liquid from light; that matters for hypochlorite, for peroxide and for any chemical that loses strength in daylight. Openings and instruments
- Outlet: 3 inch, at the bottom of the sidewall; a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab, with the fitting re-checked after the first full fill.
- Access: 18 inch manway, 153 inches up; vent outside on caustic and acid service, fill through a dip tube to the floor, and size the vent for a tanker's unload rate.
- Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.
A black wall hides the level, so plan the sender: a hydrostatic unit at the outlet or radar on the manway, chosen for the chemical. A black tank needs a light label panel so the hazard diamond and pictograms read from the door. Strap the empty tank against wind, and keep the vent clear so a fast draw cannot pull a vacuum on the wall.
In service
Outdoor bulk storage of light-sensitive chemicals at treatment plants, caustic and coagulant at plants that take full tanker loads, and, with water in it, a fire reserve in full sun sized under NFPA 22 as the fire-water reservoir design guide describes, with a wall that will outlast a water tank's. Black warms its contents in full sun; shade the tank where the site allows and draw from the base.
