The thousand gallon duty
A thousand gallons is the size people buy when the supply is intermittent and the demand is not: the homestead on a well that recovers overnight but cannot fill a trough at noon, the cabin where water arrives by pickup a few hundred gallons at a time, the market garden running drip lines off a pump, the yard that fills a sprayer. This is the narrow, tall version. Full, the tank carries 8340 lb of water on a 64 inch circle, and the floor of a rotomolded tank bears on everything it touches. Compact or pour something flat, level and continuous, take it out past the rim rather than to it, and shape it so overflow leaves the area instead of undermining the base. Strap the empty tank the day it lands: at 160 lb an empty shell nearly seven feet tall moves in a gust. Re-tension after the first fill and leave a walking gap all round. Openings and fittings
- Outlet. A 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting, factory installed low in the wall. Your valve or pump suction threads straight into it; support the valve and the first length of pipe separately so the fitting carries water, not hardware.
- Inlet. A 1-1/2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting for the fill line from the well, the pump or the downspout filter.
- Manway. A 16 inch threaded vented manway on top for filling, a float switch, inspection and cleaning. The vent lets air move as the level changes; never plug it.
