4,500 gallons standing eleven feet ten inches on a 102 inch base

The Snyder SII-7420000N43 puts 4,500 gallons on a 102 inch circle and takes it up 142 inches, eleven feet ten inches, in a white polyethylene wall listed at 900 pounds empty. The sheet rates it at a specific gravity of 1.5 and gives the maximum contents as 56,295 pounds, against 37,530 pounds for the same 4,500 gallons of water at 8.34 pounds per gallon. It publishes a service limit of 120 F / 48 C and a 3 Year Warranty, and carries ASTM among the designations in its certifications field and in its own product name. The only fitting the sheet names is an 18 inch threaded vented manway: there is no outlet size and no inlet on this sheet, so the connections are specified at order. Less floor than the wide 4,500s, and a taller shell to tie down

The site decision on this tank is floor against height, and this shell is the one that saves floor. A 102 inch base is eight feet six inches across, where the three wide 4,500 gallon tanks on the same sheet sit on 143 inches, close to twelve feet, so choosing this one frees real yard: room for a bund wall, room for a pump house, room to get a truck past the tank instead of around it. What you pay is height and restraint. At 142 inches the shell stands eleven feet ten inches and holds 56,295 pounds at the rating on the sheet, and from the hour it lands until the hour it is full, 900 pounds of empty tank at that height is a sail. Cable or band it to structure or to anchors set with the pad before the first fill, tension it properly, and retension after the first full summer, because polyethylene grows in the sun. Underneath, the load per square foot is higher than it is on a wide shell of the same volume, which makes the slab a design item rather than a groundworks item: level, continuous, in full contact, sized for the weight and carried past the wall rather than stopped at its edge, to the framework in the concrete pad sizing guide, with the containment designed alongside it where the liquid is regulated. Above the tank, the 18 inch manway sits eleven feet ten inches up, so fixed access with a rail and a level instrument read from the ground are both part of the installation and not extras. Four tanks here hold 4,500 gallons at the same 900 lb, and they split cleanly into two shapes. The three 7000400 grades sit on a 143 inch base only 91 in tall, which is the buy when a roof, a canopy or a low bay caps the height and the yard has twelve feet of clear floor to give; two of them are black walls that keep light off the liquid, and one carries a 1.35 rating in its own name. This tank does the opposite: the same volume on a 102 inch circle at 142 in tall, which is a foot and a half less base in every direction at the cost of a strapping job and a ladder. That is the reason to take it, and the rating on this sheet is 1.5 where each of the others carries its own rating on its own sheet, none of which this page asserts. Around the edges of the group, 5210000N40 is the extreme version of this tank's own argument, 4,400 gallons on a 90 inch base standing 182 in at 1,100 lb, which is fifteen feet of tank for a genuinely tight footprint; and 7000500N40 goes the other way with 4,600 gallons in cross-linked polyethylene on a 120 inch base at 116 in and 1,450 lb. No outlet on this sheet, so the connections are specified at order

  • Outlet: this sheet publishes no outlet size and no outlet material. We do not print one here, and nothing is inferred from the sibling tanks. Tell us the liquid, the flow you need and how the tank is being plumbed, and we will confirm the outlet size, the fitting style and the gasket against Snyder's current specification in writing before the order is placed.
  • No inlet either: the fill connection is specified as well. On a shell standing eleven feet ten inches that is worth doing properly, because a delivery tipped in through the crown of a tank this tall is neither safe nor clean; a fill connection at working level, or a drop pipe taken down inside the shell, is the answer.
  • Head to design for: 142 inches of liquid at a rating of 1.5 means the pressure at the base is half again what the same height of water would give, so whatever outlet is specified, the valve, the gaskets and the first run of pipe get rated for the liquid rather than for the tank, and the valve rides on its own support off the pad.
  • Pump: below the base connection, on its own base, with a short falling suction run so the column keeps it flooded to the last inches. Size it on the real density and viscosity, not on a water curve, and fit a cleanable strainer and a run-dry cut-out that stops it with liquid still over the fitting.
  • Access: an 18 inch threaded vented manway, the one fitting this sheet does name, at eleven feet ten inches. Fixed access with a rail, the vent kept clear whenever a pump is running, and no pump allowed to draw against a closed vent, because a tall shell takes its own wall in faster than anybody can reach the switch.

A sheet that names the manway and nothing else is not a gap to be filled in with a guess, it is a conversation to have before the order. That conversation is also the right moment to decide what the tank will be monitored with, because the point of designing the connections rather than inheriting them is that the level instrument, the fill line and the outlet can all be put where an operator can reach them. Where the service is warm, hold the 120 F / 48 C figure on this sheet as a hard input; where it is cold, trace or insulate the valve and the exposed run and let the body ice from the surface down.

Bulk liquid holding, and the headspace that wears out first

4,500 gallons on a small footprint is bought where the yard is full: bulk chemical and additive storage at a plant, brine and solution holding, fertiliser and crop input storage at a dealer or a co-op, process and utility water, wastewater equalisation ahead of treatment, and reclaimed liquid held between stages. On any of those, the part of the tank that decides its life is not the part holding the liquid. Two plants are named on this sheet, Chowchilla, California and Lincoln, Nebraska, and we confirm which one an order ships from when the order is placed rather than guessing at it here. Either way it moves at class 400 as the sheet lists it, crated at 102 inches by 102 inches by 142 inches, as an oversize load. Width and height both matter on this one: eight feet six inches across is a permitted load that needs a place to stop, and a tank standing eleven feet ten inches once it is upright needs clear air under the tree line and the overhead services.
