The family is where this tank explains itself, and the first thing to say is what the sheet says. Four moldings hold 550 gallons in this same 48 by 48 by 75 inch shell. Three of them, the 1800000C34, the 1800000N48 and the 1800000N51, are listed at 110 pounds. This one is listed at 200 pounds. The sheet gives both figures, we print what it says, and we do not interpret the suffix or explain the difference; if the weight matters to your lift or your platform, ask us and we will get it from Snyder in writing. What the sheet does support is the rest of the buy: a black wall, a specific gravity rating of 1.9, and 8,715 pounds of contents at that rating, which is a dense liquid rating on a tank small enough to sit in a corner. Black polyethylene passes no light to the liquid, which is the reason to take this molding over a white one when what is inside degrades in daylight, and it is also the reason a level has to be read by a gauge or a sight arrangement rather than by eye, because the wall gives nothing away. The shape is the other half. Four feet across and six feet three inches tall is a footprint that fits inside a bunded tray in a plant room, beside a pump skid, under a mezzanine, or in the back of a service body if that is how the site works. Small does not mean casual: full of water this tank stands 4,587 pounds on a 48 inch circle, and a molded floor bears on everything it touches and nothing else, so it wants a flat, continuous, level base, engineered where the ground is doubtful to the framework in the concrete pad sizing guide, and a berm or a tray sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated. At 200 pounds empty on a narrow base it is easy to knock and easy to move, so strap it and keep traffic off it. 550 gallons three ways, and the 500 and the 710 beside them

Take this molding over its own siblings when the part family is what your specification calls out, and read all four sheets before you decide, because the weights on them are not the same. Outside the shell, the two neighbours trade volume against silhouette in opposite directions. The 5780100N42 holds 500 gallons on a 53 inch base at 77 inches and 141 pounds, slightly wider and slightly taller for fifty gallons less, in cross-linked polyethylene. The 1700200N42 goes the other way: 710 gallons on a 60 inch base at only 68 inches, the widest and lowest of the group at 185 pounds, which is the one to buy when a ceiling, a mezzanine or a truck body sets the height and the floor is free. Among the three, this page is the narrow, tall, black one at a 1.9 rating: the smallest footprint, the least floor given up, and the wall that keeps daylight off whatever is inside.

A vented manway, and no outlet on the sheet

• Vent and fill: the 18 inch threaded vented manway is the only fitting on this sheet, so it is the fill point, the inspection hatch and the vent path together, and on a 550 gallon tank filled from a hose or a drum pump the vent still has to pass air faster than the fill arrives. Keep it clear, keep it screened, run it outdoors where the liquid fumes, and never draw the tank down against a restricted vent; a small shell collapses as readily as a large one.
• Headspace: on a tank six feet three inches tall the vapor band above the liquid is close enough to see properly, which is an advantage worth using. Take a light to it every time the lid is off. • Outlet: none on this sheet. The outlet field is empty, so this page asserts no outlet size, style or material, and nobody should plan pipework off a guess. Tell us how you mean to draw from it, by gravity from a base fitting, over the top with a pump and a dip tube, or by drum pump through the manway, and we will confirm in writing what Snyder can fit to this molding before you order.

Whatever the draw arrangement turns out to be, two rules do not change. Nothing rigid is bolted from the tank to a pipe that is fixed to a wall or set in concrete, because the shell moves with temperature and the pipe does not, and the first valve rides on its own support rather than hanging on the tank. Where the site freezes, protect the valve and the exposed pipe run and let the body ice from the top down. And on a tank this size, put the chemical's name and the fill date on the shell in letters a stranger can read, because small tanks are the ones that get filled with the wrong thing.

Small batch chemical service and day tank duty

A 550 gallon tank is bought to be the last stage before use. The duties are a day tank feeding a dosing pump from a bulk vessel, batch make-up in a plant room or a laboratory building, a plating or finishing shop holding a concentrated bath addition, a car wash or wash-down chemical on a rack, a nursery or greenhouse mixing feed, an equipment yard holding a treatment chemical in a bunded tray, and a service body or trailer-mounted supply for a crew that works away from the plant. At a 1.9 rating the wall is bought for density, so the honest version of the sizing question is how much of a dense liquid the duty draws in a day and how often the bulk tank or the drum delivery refills it. LTL at class 300, 200 pounds, out of Chowchilla

The SII-1800400N51 is molded at Chowchilla, California and moves as LTL freight at class 300 as the sheet lists it, shipping at 48 inches by 48 inches by 75 inches. Four feet by four feet by six feet three inches on a pallet is a shipment a normal dock and a normal forklift can handle, which is the practical difference between this tank and the oversize loads in the same family, and it is worth a great deal on a lane to a plant room rather than a yard. Take it off with a forklift or four hands, never by dragging it on its base, and check the shell and the manway threads before you sign, because a small tank rides between other freight. Fill it with water to the manway once and hold it before anything else goes in, watching the base and the manway seat. Keep the shipment long enough to move the tank into position on it; the last twenty feet of an install is where small tanks get scuffed.
