A two inch bulkhead and an eight inch lid

• The outlet sets the plan: a 2 inch PP female NPT bulkhead fitting. On a 225 gallon shell that is a fast drain, which is exactly what nurse and transfer work wants, and it is also the size your valve, your camlock and your hose should all match without adaptors stacked on the fitting.
• Fit a full-bore valve straight to the bulkhead and a union under it. Every later change then happens below the union, and no wrench load is ever applied to the moulded boss.
• Carry the weight of the valve and the hose on the frame, not on the fitting. On a shell that gets moved and bumped, the outlet is the single most damaged part of the tank, and it is damaged by the bending load a hanging hose puts on it rather than by pressure.
• Access is an 8 inch threaded vented lid, with the lid size field also reading 8 inches. Eight inches is a fill, a light and a hand, so plan cleaning and mixing as jobs done through a small opening.
• The lid field says vented. Pulling 225 gallons out through a 2 inch port against a sealed top is enough to deform the shell, so keep the vent path clear and put it on the same checklist as the strainer.
• There is no inlet field, so the tank fills through that 8 inch lid. That decides your fill arrangement more than anything else on this page: a fixed line and a hook for the hose end beats a hose balanced across the top opening every time.
