One more inch of height: mounting the 230 on a trailer deck

This tank goes on a deck, and 43 inches is the height you are buying. That extra inch over the 42 inch tank in the same rectangle sounds like nothing until the mount has a cover, a rack, a headache bar or a doorway sized to the inch, at which point it is the whole decision. Where it sits well: a flat-deck utility or landscape trailer, bolted through the legs with the pump and reel beside it rather than above it; a skid or pallet frame that gets set down by forklift and left; a flat-bed truck deck; a shop or barn floor as a standing gravity supply with the outlet high enough to fill a pail. Where it sits badly: a light pickup, because 1,918 pounds of water in the bed is most of what a half-ton has to give and the load is behind the axle; and any deck that is not flat, because the legs bear through their whole flat feet and a rib, a lip or a broken board becomes the bearing point for all of it. Put a mat or a sheet of plywood under it on a ribbed bed and let it sit in full contact. The surge is the other thing to design for. Two hundred and thirty gallons in a 52 inch body swings fore and aft under braking with more authority than the weight suggests, and it is worst at part-full, so restrain it in both directions through the legs and inspect the anchor points more often than you inspect the tank. Five more gallons, seventeen fewer pounds

Against the SII-1003900C26 this is the better buy on the sheet's own numbers in two ways and the worse buy in one. Better: it holds five more gallons and it is listed at 68 pounds against 85, which is seventeen pounds a person feels every time the tank comes off a deck, and it carries the 10 inch lid instead of the six, which is the difference between reaching into a tank to clean it and poking at it. Worse: it is 43 inches tall instead of 42, and where an inch of headroom is the constraint that ends the conversation. The sheet gives the larger, lighter tank and the smaller, heavier one in the same 52 by 38 inch rectangle and offers no explanation, so neither do we. Above it, the SII-1320000C26 keeps this exact width and height and stretches to 72 inches for 300 gallons at 92 pounds, which is the honest upgrade path: same deck width, same clearance, more length, thirty percent more volume. That is a better move than buying two of these, because one tank means one mount, one outlet and one hose. In a family this tightly packed the specification that decides the order is almost never the capacity.

What a 1.25 inch outlet will and will not move in an hour

• Outlet: a 1.25 inch outlet, as the sheet lists it, at the low end of the body above the legs. This is the same port the smallest leg tanks in this family carry, so be clear-eyed about it: on 230 gallons it is a feed fitting, not a dump fitting. It suits a spray pump, a transfer pump or a hose line at working rates, and it will take its time gravity-draining the tank into a pail. • The last gallons: a 43 inch body has a broad floor, so a level deck leaves a residue at the bottom and a deck tilted toward the outlet does not. Shim the far end of a skid, or park with the outlet downhill.
• Valve and first joint: a shut-off at the outlet on its own support off the deck, and a flexible connector before any hard pipe. With 1,918 pounds of liquid surging in a 52 inch body, a rigid line bolted from the fitting to a pump bracket is a fitting failure waiting for a hard stop.
• No inlet on this sheet, so none is asserted here. Filling is through the lid, hose down inside the body rather than splashing onto the surface.

The duties that suit a 230 on legs are the ones where the tank travels short distances and gets drawn down over days rather than minutes. A pull-behind sprayer or nurse trailer for pasture, right-of-way, turf or orchard work. Water hauled to stock, to a planting crew or to a remote building. De-icing brine on a contractor or small municipal rig, where the load goes out at dawn and comes back part-full. Wash-down, dust control and equipment rinse water on a construction, landscape or utility trailer. Fluid feed and starter fertilizer to a planter. A yard dispensing tank, filled by bulk delivery and drawn through the week by gravity into pails or by pump into a smaller rig. A standing supply in a shop where floor space is cheap and height is not. The common factor is that the tank stands on its own feet on something flat, which is what a leg tank is for, and that the 10 inch lid gets opened regularly, which is why this part number rather than its shorter twin. Two honest limits. There is no secondary containment on this tank, so it is not the buy where containment is required. And the 120 F / 48 C limit on this sheet is reached by a loaded tank sitting in summer sun on a dark deck, so shade it, fill it cool, or work it down before the afternoon.
