California and Texas, and nothing east of that

The origin block on 45260 is short and it is the first thing a buyer should read. Two plants mould it, Hanford in California's central valley and Fairfield in east Texas, and the ships-from cell names those same two states and no others. That is a southern and western footprint. If your delivery address is in the West, the Southwest or along the Gulf, this is a short-lane part number and the freight will reflect it. If your address is in New England or the upper Midwest, the same tank is coming a long way and the quote deserves to be in hand before anything else happens.

Two origins also means two possible answers to when. A date quoted against this record is a date against whichever yard is filling it, and Hanford and Fairfield are not interchangeable for transit purposes even though they are interchangeable for the part number. Ask which one before you book a crane or a crew.

Freight class 400, mode LTL. On a class 400 bill the carrier is charging for a large low-density object and the pounds barely enter into it, so two things move the number: how far, and how hard is it to get off the truck at your address. The second of those is entirely within your control and is worth more attention than most buyers give it.

Which brings us to the pad. A 102 inch circle is eight and a half feet of shell, and full it puts 25020 lb of water on the ground through that footprint. Continuous support, flat across the whole circle, extending past the edge, swept clean before the tank comes down. The honest limitation on 45260 is the inlet column, which carries nothing but a dash. There is no second port on this record. Every gallon that goes in goes over the top and through the manway, and if your process wants a bottom fill, a return line or a recirculation port, this sheet does not supply one and you should settle that with the manufacturer against this part number before you buy rather than discover it on install day.

Four shells that all print three thousand gallons

Four of these rows say 3000 gallons and they say it in three different shapes. This record and 42380B share the 102 by 102 by 93 inch shell. 45253 puts the same volume into a 91 inch plan and takes it up to 119 inches. 40755B lands between them at 95 by 95 by 109. Same gallons, three different demands on your building, and that is the axis on which the choice is actually made. The N-44668 row publishes a height of 119 inches and leaves its other cells empty; the blank stays blank here.

Look at the plan numbers and the height numbers as a pair rather than separately. Going from a 102 inch plan to a 91 inch plan buys back eleven inches of ground in every direction and spends it upward. Whether that is a good trade depends entirely on which of the two you have spare, and nobody but you knows that.

Why 45260 out of this group: it is the row that combines the widest plan in the table with the lowest height printed against 3000 gallons, and it carries a grade line of 1.5 with a maximum contents figure of 37530 lb and a three year warranty cell. Seven and a half feet of tank on an eight and a half foot circle

The proportions here are close to square and that suits an outdoor pad or an open bay better than a tight indoor corner. Ninety-three inches of height clears an ordinary eave, stays below most canopy structures, and keeps the top of the tank at a height where a short ladder does the job. Meanwhile the 102 inch plan means the centre of gravity stays low and the shell is not asking the pad to resist much overturning. For a yard installation in a windy place, that combination is worth more than it looks.

Size the volume against what you actually turn over. Three pieces of background match the duties this size usually ends up doing. Commissioning the ports in order

1. Open the 16 inch threaded vented manway and look at the threads on both parts in daylight before anything else happens. This is the only access this tank has, and a closure that seats badly on day one seats worse on day four hundred. Start it square, hand tight, every time.
2. Find the vent in that manway and satisfy yourself that it is clear and stays clear. Pulling 25020 lb of water out through a 2 inch port pulls an equal volume of air in through the vent; if the vent is blocked, the shell supplies the difference and you will not enjoy the result.
3. Look at the 2 inch PP female NPT bulkhead fitting from the outside, all the way round the flange, before you thread anything into it. You are checking that the gasket face is clean and undamaged, because that is the surface doing the sealing.
4. Note that the inlet field is blank on this record and plan the fill accordingly: over the top, through the manway, on a bracketed line rather than a hose hooked over the rim.
5. Fill with water to the top once, on the final pad, and leave it a day. Then go back to the bulkhead by hand. A 102 inch shell settles into its working shape under 25020 lb and a fitting made up on an empty tank has not been asked the real question yet.
6. Record the two limits the sheet publishes where whoever operates the tank will see them: the grade line of 1.5 with a maximum contents figure of 37530 lb, and a service ceiling of 120 F / 48 C.

The install specific hides in step five. The temptation with a rigid pipe run is to build it while the tank is empty and accessible and the trench is open. Resist it. Put a flexible connection at the bulkhead, run rigid pipe beyond that on its own supports, and let the tank move the small amount it is going to move without asking a threaded penetration to absorb it.

419 pounds empty, and the crate is mostly air

The tank ships as itself at 102 by 102 by 93 inches and 419 lb, class 400, LTL, out of California or Texas. A 400 classification on a box that size is the carrier pricing the room rather than the load, so the two things that move your quote are the length of the lane and how straightforward it is to get an eight and a half foot object off a trailer at your address. Sort both out in advance and run the numbers in the freight cost estimator; the listed price is before freight.

Do the receiving inspection while the tank is still hanging on the forks, because 419 lb is light enough that the machine can hold it up while you look and that is the only moment in its life when the bottom is at eye level. Walk all the way around the bottom knuckle where the wall turns into the base. That radius is the part of the shell that gets dragged, set down on a stone, or caught on a trailer rail, and it is the part you will never see again once the tank is standing on its pad. Look for scuffing deep enough to catch a fingernail rather than surface marks.

When the knuckle is clean, set it straight down onto the prepared circle rather than onto the yard for later. Then go and do the one thing everybody skips: photograph the tank on its pad, with the delivery paperwork, on the day it arrives. That photograph has settled more freight claims than any argument ever has. Save the pallet; a tank that ever has to move again is easier to move on it.
