Chemical compatibility
This is a 1.5 specific gravity polyethylene tank. The resin reads as HDLPE but is not fully confirmed, so confirm HDLPE versus XLPE with us before putting it into chemical service. Within the 1.5 SG rating and per the Norwesco chemical-resistance chart (always read it for your specific concentration and temperature), this tank is suited to:
- Acetic Acid at 60% with PP or PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
- Aluminum Sulfate at 50% with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
- Calcium Chloride at 40% with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
- DEF at 32.5% with 316 stainless fittings and EPDM gaskets
- Ferrous Sulfate at 20% with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
- Magnesium Chloride at 30% with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
- Sodium Carbonate at 30% with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
- Urea Solution at 50% with PP or PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
- Ozonated Water up to 10 PPM with PVC fittings and EPDM gaskets
One exception stands out on that list: DEF needs 316 stainless fittings rather than the PVC or PP that work for the rest, still with EPDM gaskets, so do not carry over a PVC fitting plan from another chemical when you plumb a DEF tank.
The mistake to avoid
Do not assume this 1.5 SG tank covers every liquid. Denser and more aggressive chemicals require the 1.9 specific gravity version of this tank, including ethylene glycol, ferric chloride, ferric sulfate, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, hydrofluosilicic acid, hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, phosphoric acid, polyaluminum chloride, potassium carbonate, potassium hydroxide, propylene glycol, sodium bisulfate, sodium bisulfite, sodium hypochlorite, sodium thiosulfate, sulfuric acid, and zinc orthophosphate. Several of those change the seal material too: hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, hydrofluosilicic acid, hydrogen peroxide, phosphoric acid, sodium hypochlorite, and sulfuric acid call for Viton gaskets, and peracetic acid calls for Aflas, rather than EPDM.
