The duty for a low room, and who fills it

This tank is bought by people whose ceiling beat them. A greenhouse with a gutter and a trellis overhead, a wash rack under a mezzanine, a pump house with a joist for a roof, a food plant corridor with a duct run at five feet, a fabrication shop putting a coolant or a wash solution beside the line, a farm shop that wants 1,100 gallons but has a shed door and not a barn. Every one of those duties needs volume without height, and this shell gives it: the top of the tank is at four feet seven inches, which means the manway is reached from a step rather than a platform, the fill hose is handled at chest height, and nobody writes a fall-protection plan to open a lid. The 1.9 rating on the sheet means the low shape does not limit what can go in it, which is unusual at this height and is the real argument for the tank. What the shape costs is slab. The rating allows 17,431 pounds of contents and plain water alone puts 9,174 pounds in, and a rotationally molded floor bears on its whole floor, so a seven foot circle of concrete has to be engineered and level end to end, per the concrete pad sizing guide, in full contact and inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated; a wide tank on a pad with one low corner puts its weight on that corner. It also costs door width: 86 inches does not pass a 36 inch doorway, so the route from the dock to the pad is measured before the order, not after the truck arrives. Low and wide is the least wind-sensitive shape in the range, which is exactly why people skip the straps on it; at 210 pounds empty it will still walk across a slab in a gust, so band it anyway. The wide 1,100s, and what the sheet says about weight

Four tanks share the 86 by 55 inch footprint and this one carries the most wall of them on the sheet: 210 pounds where the two lighter listings are 160 and 180. That is what the sheet gives and it is what we print; we do not explain a difference the sheet does not explain, and each of the others is rated as its own sheet says. Buy this one when the load is dense and the ceiling is low, which is the combination the others in the row do not all cover, and buy a black one from that row when daylight is the enemy instead of density. If the constraint turns out to be floor rather than ceiling, the two rows at the bottom are the same volume class stood up on a 60 inch base: the 1831000C34 at 89 inches and the 1830200N40 at 109 inches, both needing a strapping plan this tank barely needs.

A flooded suction on a shallow tank

• Pump: a shallow tank gives a pump less head than a tall one, and that changes the install rather than ruling it out. Set the pump lower than the tank base, on the pad and not on a stand, keep the suction line short, straight and generously sized, and avoid a long horizontal run that traps air at a high point. A self-priming pump earns its money here. Wire a low-level cut-out, because a wide tank has a lot of floor and the last inches go fast once the surface drops below the draw-off.
• Outlet: the sheet lists the outlet as 9. That is the field as given, not a pipe size, and no bulkhead diameter appears anywhere on this sheet, so we print it and stop there. Tell us the liquid and the draw-off you need at order and we confirm what this molding accepts, in what material, before anything is drilled.
• Listed opening: an 18 inch threaded, vented manway at 55 inches, reached from a step with a hand on the rim. That accessibility is the tank's best feature for inspection and its worst habit in service, because a lid people can reach is a lid people leave off.
• Fill and vent: a dip tube to the floor, the vent piped outdoors on anything that fumes, and the vent sized to the delivery pump; a wide shallow tank rises fast on a fill, so the vent has to breathe at the truck's rate.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C. Warranty: 3 year. Rating: specific gravity 1.9 as the sheet gives it.

Whatever is plumbed at the base is carried on its own support off the pad with a flexible connector to hard pipe, never rigid pipe into the shell; the wall of a wide tank flexes across a bigger diameter than a narrow one and a bolted-in pipe run fights that movement every cycle. Keep the manway threaded shut between deliveries, label the wall with the one liquid inside, and light the band above the liquid line at every opening. Low bays, greenhouses and wash racks

Nutrient solution under greenhouse benches, coolant or wash solution beside a machining line, a dense inhibitor or brine at a plant whose chemical room has a duct at head height, makeup water in a pump house, a farm shop tank that has to go through a shed door, and a skid build where the whole assembly has to ride under a bridge. Marked Tree, Arkansas, and a class 400 cube

This is the only tank in its group molded in Marked Tree, Arkansas, which puts a Mid-South or Midwest dock on a short lane, and it is the only one the sheet lists at class 400 rather than 300; a shell 86 inches across takes a lot of deck for 210 pounds and the freight class reflects the cube and not the weight. Price the lane to your ZIP in the freight cost estimator, and the listed price is before freight. Unload with a forklift and long forks or four hands on the pallet, straps under the body and never a sling through the manway, and set it on the cured pad in one move rather than dragging it into position. Then water: fill to the manway, hold it, and walk the whole circumference twice, because on a wide tank the pad edge is where a problem shows first; drain and dry before the working liquid arrives. Keep the pallet, because a tank this wide is far easier to move again on it than off it. Write the fill date on the manway with a paint marker; it answers the first question anyone asks about a tank.
