A 1,200 gallon black tank with a siphon tube, bought by plants that pump from the top

The 32060-BLACK is the 1,200 gallon tank a plant orders when the chemical room was framed before anyone planned the storage. It is a black polyethylene vertical tank 86 inches across and 56.5 inches tall, seven feet two inches on the floor and four feet eight inches to the top of its 20 inch threaded, vented manway, 315 pounds empty. The outlet is a 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting carrying a siphon tube. The sheet rates the wall for a specific gravity of 1.5, which is 15,012 pounds of contents against 10,008 pounds of water. Service limit 120 F / 48 C, freight at class 300, molded at Albertville, Alabama. The sheet lists no warranty term for this part number, and we do not print one it does not give.

Who buys a low, wide 1,200 and what the delivery looks like

This is a duty tank before it is anything else. The buyer is a water or wastewater plant, an irrigation district pump house, or a co-op blending shed that needs a full month of chemical on hand and has a room with four and a half feet of clear height above the pad. A tall 1,200 gallon column will not go in that room; this one stands four feet eight inches to the manway rim, which means an operator fills it and inspects it from the floor, with no platform, no ladder and no fall protection to argue about. The delivery is the other half of the decision. At 1,200 gallons the load is a partial tanker or a large tote-to-tank transfer, so the driver is pumping in while the plant is drawing out, and the truck is only on site for part of an hour. What the plant gives up for that is floor: a seven foot two inch circle carrying 15,012 pounds at the rating, bearing on the whole footprint the way a rotationally molded floor does, on a slab engineered per the concrete pad sizing guide, level and in full contact, inside a berm sized to 110 percent of the tank where the liquid is regulated. Weight is the honest surprise here. The sheet lists this tank at 315 pounds where the 1,100 gallon 1710000C26, a shell one and a half inches shorter at the same 86 inch diameter, is listed at 160 pounds; the sheet gives both numbers and explains neither, so we print what it says and leave the interpretation to the maker. A low, wide tank is also the one shape that does not need strapping to fight the wind when it is empty, though it still gets tied to structure in a building where a forklift works. Black polyethylene passes no light to the liquid, ages better than a white wall in the sun, runs warmer, and hides the level, so a sight tube or a sender is the gauge. Read the table as a height-versus-floor trade at one capacity. The three 1830200 tanks hold the same 1,200 gallons on a five foot circle at nine feet one inch, cross-linked walls by their names and rated on their own sheets; they are the buy when the building has height and the floor is crowded, and they need a platform to reach the top. Snyder also molds a heavier black 1,200 in this same 86 by 56.5 inch shell at a different rating, listed separately, and that is the one to compare when the liquid is denser than this sheet covers. Step either side of 1,200 and the 1710000C26 is the natural white 1,100 on this same wide base at 55 inches, the tank to look at when the operator wants to read the level through the wall, and the 1830400N40 puts 1,300 gallons on a six foot circle at seven feet three inches.

Pulling suction through a siphon tube instead of a bottom drain

  • Pump and outlet: the 2 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting on this sheet carries a siphon tube, and that changes the pump work. A siphon draw takes liquid from inside the tank rather than off the floor of it, so the pump has to lift the column instead of being fed by it. Use a self-priming pump, or a foot-mounted pump with a primed suction line and a check valve that holds prime between runs. A centrifugal pump set above the liquid line on a siphon draw will run dry and polish its own seal off.
  • Low-level protection: a siphon tube also means the tank does not empty by gravity when the pump stops, so the last few inches are not a free drain. Fit a low-level float or a level switch wired to stop the pump, and set it above the tube inlet, not at the floor.
  • Access: the 20 inch threaded, vented manway sits at 56.5 inches, reached from the floor. Its lid vent breathes a gravity fill and a small transfer pump; a tanker pump pushes liquid in faster than a lid vent lets air out, so size the vent to the delivery rate before the first load or open the manway for the fill with someone standing at it. Screen the vent and run it outdoors on a liquid that fumes.
  • Headspace: stop the fill at the shoulder. On a wide, shallow tank the headspace is a thin band, and it is the band a light goes into at every opening.
  • Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

Everything about the plumbing on this tank follows from the siphon tube. Name the liquid at order and the fitting, gasket and bolting are matched to it, with a flexible connector between the bulkhead and hard pipe and the first valve carried on its own support off the pad, never hung on the wall. Where winters freeze, the valve and the first pipe run get trace heat or insulation, and the siphon tube is the part to think about first, because a frozen tube strands a tank that still reads full.

Water plant chemical rooms and irrigation district pump houses

Sodium hypochlorite and the lighter coagulants at a small municipal plant are the standing duty: light degrades the liquid, the black wall keeps it at strength, and 1,200 gallons is a month of feed at a plant that doses continuously. Fill it with water to the shoulder once and hold it, watching the pad edge and the base fitting for a weep, then drain and dry it before the chemical arrives. Prime the siphon line on that water fill too, and time how long the pump takes to pull it; that figure is the one the operator will want at three in the morning.
