The duty that needs a 1.9 wall and a five foot footprint

Start with what fills it. A 1.9 rating is bought for the heavy liquids: a concentrated acid or caustic feed at a treatment plant, a brine or a saturated salt solution, a heavy scale or corrosion inhibitor, a dense industrial concentrate that a plant buys by the truck and doses by the gallon. Those loads arrive in a tanker and the receiving room is almost always narrow, because dense chemistry lives indoors, inside a curb, at the end of a line of vessels somebody added ten years ago. That is the shape this tank is cut to. A 60 inch circle passes through a bay door, tucks into the end of an existing containment curb, and leaves an aisle where a wider tank would block one. The price of the narrow base is nine feet one inch of height, which is above a 96 inch ceiling, so on this tank the purlin, the sprinkler head and the light fixture get measured before the order is placed rather than after the truck is at the dock. Below, the load is real: the 1.9 rating allows 19,015 pounds of contents and plain water alone puts 10,008 pounds inside the shell, all of it bearing on a 60 inch circle, which is a heavier pressure per square foot than a wide tank at the same volume puts down. The slab is engineered to the concrete pad sizing guide, level and in full contact, inside containment sized to the tank, which on a dense chemical duty is usually the local rule and not a preference. Nine feet of empty shell on a five foot base is the easiest shape in the range for wind to move, so it is banded to structure in the upper third before the first fill. The 1830200 shell, four walls deep

The reason to buy this one rather than the tank directly below it in the table is the rating, and nothing else: same gallons, same 60 by 109 inch shell, same manway, a heavier wall and ten more pounds of it on the sheet. Pay for that when the liquid is dense and do not pay for it when the liquid is near water, because on a light load the white tank at the lower rating does the same work. The two black ones keep daylight out of the liquid, and each of the four is rated as its own sheet says. If the ceiling is the binding constraint rather than the floor, look sideways instead: the 1710000C26 puts 1,100 gallons on an 86 inch base and stops at 55 inches, and the 1830400N40 holds 1,300 gallons in a wider shell at 87 inches.

Suction, prime and a dense liquid

• The pump is where a dense duty is won or lost. A liquid at the top of this rating is heavier per gallon than water, so a pump that suits a water service will not lift it the same way: set the transfer or metering pump below the tank base so the nine foot column floods the suction and the pump never has to lift, keep the suction line short, straight and one size generous, and wire a low-level cut-out so it stops before it pulls air. A strainer ahead of the pump catches what settles out of a tanker load.
• Outlet: the sheet's outlet field reads "1 Manway / Lid" and it gives no bottom fitting size anywhere. On a dense chemical duty that is a specification to settle in writing rather than a blank to fill in on site, so name the liquid and the draw-off at order and we confirm what this molding takes, in what material, with what gasket, before anything is drilled.
• Listed opening: an 18 inch threaded, vented manway at 109 inches. That is platform height with no argument: a fixed platform with a rail and a gate, and a permanent fill connection landed at the manway.
• Fill and vent: a dip tube to the floor so a dense liquid does not cascade nine feet and splash the headspace and the gasket seat, the vent piped outdoors, and the vent sized to the delivery truck's pump.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C. Warranty: 3 year. Rating: specific gravity 1.9 as the sheet gives it.

Nine feet of dense liquid standing above a base connection puts more static pressure on that connection than the same fitting sees on a squat tank, which is why every run leaving the base is carried on its own stand off the pad with a flexible connector between the tank and hard pipe, and why nothing rigid is ever bolted straight to the shell. Vapour in the headspace works on the wall above the liquid line harder than the liquid works on the wall below it, so that band is what gets the light every time the manway is opened, on a schedule, with the date written down. Dense chemistry on a small footprint

Acid and caustic feed rooms at water and wastewater plants, brine and saturated salt storage at a softening skid or an ice plant, inhibitor and coagulant inventory at an industrial utility, plating and metal finishing supply, and any dosing room where the liquid is heavy and the aisle is narrow. Freight, unloading, and the hydrostatic hold

Class 300 and 310 pounds from Chowchilla, California is what the sheet gives. A tall parcel prices on the space it takes on the deck rather than the weight it carries, so put the ZIP into the freight cost estimator before the order is cut and read the listed price as before freight. Unloading is a pallet jack or a forklift with the forks under the pallet, straps under the body, never a sling through the manway, and the tank goes straight onto the cured pad inside its containment rather than onto a staging slab it will be dragged off later. Fill it with water to the manway, hold it long enough to walk the base and the containment floor twice, then drain it and dry it out completely before a dense chemical goes anywhere near it. File the commissioning date and the part number in the maintenance log the same afternoon, because on a tank that looks exactly like the three walls listed beside it, the paperwork is the only thing that says which one you own. Keep the delivery paperwork with the tank; the serial number on the shell is what a warranty claim starts from.
