Light drives the breakdown of hypochlorite, of some coagulants and of most of the organic chemicals a plant stores; a standard white wall lets some of it through, a black wall lets none through and hides the level, and the opaque white is the compromise Snyder molds for chemical service, dark inside and readable outside. Full, it puts 23,769 pounds on a 60 inch circle at the rating, which a slab in full contact carries; a single wall tank of regulated chemical stands inside a berm or a containment tub sized to it, strapped to the wall, because a 60 inch base under eleven feet of dense liquid has a high center of gravity. Snyder's 1,300 to 1,600 gallon verticals

The 1830400N52 is the other opaque tank, 1,300 gallons on a 72 inch base at 87 inches for a site with a wider door and a lower ceiling. The 8120100W94303, WV45 and 32549 lay 1,500 and 1,600 gallons down under 72 inches on an 86 inch base for a site with floor and no height, the last two as water tanks.

The fittings list

Choose the level sender for the chemical and read it at ground level; an opaque wall shows a shadow line in daylight, not a number. Keep the lid closed against vapor loss. Label it so the fire inspector and the workplace inspector read the same thing. Insulate or drain the outlet valve and the first run of pipe wherever the ground freezes.

The truck at the manway

A delivery truck's pump can push air out faster than a stock vent can pass it, so the vent is sized for the unload rate or the fill goes through a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent line. A fill pipe to the floor keeps caustic or coagulant from free-falling and foaming. A dense liquid heats when water is added to it, so a batch tank is filled with water before the chemical, never after. The first delivery into a new tank is watched from start to finish, with the floor and the outlet fitting checked as the level climbs, and each delivery after it is logged with its date and strength; for hypochlorite the log is also the turnover schedule.

What goes in it

Hypochlorite and light-sensitive coagulants at a small plant that keeps certifications on file, ferric and other dense coagulants in a chemical room reached through a door, acid feed for pH control, and any regulated liquid where the level has to be readable and the chemical dark. One chemical per tank, labeled for both inspectors at once.
