What cross-linking buys

Linear polyethylene softens with heat and creeps under sustained load; cross-linked polyethylene is molded with a catalyst that ties the polymer chains into one network, so it holds its shape under a dense liquid, resists the stress cracking oxidizers cause, and tolerates heat. The trade is that it cannot be plastic-welded, so any added port is a bulkhead through a drilled hole, decided before the tank is filled. The N43 is the certified linear tank with the 1.5 wall for chemicals that do not attack a linear resin, 5 pounds lighter; the N48 and C34 are the other linear grades. The 1770000C34 and 32118 lay 1,500 and 1,600 gallons down to about 72 inches on an 86 inch base for a site with floor and no height.

Ports

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 124 inches up, reached from a platform; vent outside on hypochlorite and acid service, fill through a dip tube.
• Outlet: specify the bulkhead fitting for the chemical when ordering, and decide any added port before the tank is filled, because XLPE cannot be welded; run a flexible line to the pump suction and hang the valve off the floor, not the tank.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

Hypochlorite is hard on wetted parts, so the level sender is chosen for the chemical and read at ground level; a low-level float switch keeps the pump from running dry. Shade the tank; hypochlorite degrades with heat and time, so it is bought at short turnover. Set the dosing pump lower than the outlet so gravity primes it, and keep the manway closed against vapor loss.
