Why the 7410000 shape and not the 5130000

Start with the family. Both shapes hold 3,000 gallons in the same black cross-linked polyethylene, so the choice is geometry, not chemistry. The 5130000 tanks stand ten feet seven inches on a seven and a half foot circle; this one stands eight feet on an eight and a half foot circle. Under a low shed roof, a barn eave, or a chemical room built before anyone planned a tank, eight feet with a vent line above it fits where ten and a half does not. The low shape also carries its weight lower, so it needs less strapping, and the manway is reached from a step ladder instead of a platform. What it costs is floor: a 102 inch circle where the tall shell wants 90, and a pad that carries 37,530 pounds at the rating, or 25,020 pounds of water, in full contact across that circle, engineered per the concrete pad sizing guide and set inside a berm sized to the tank where the liquid is regulated. Strap it while it is empty. A black tank warms and grows in the sun, and a strap set tight in spring is loose by August. Black polyethylene absorbs the ultraviolet that ages a white wall, passes no light to the liquid, runs warmer than white, and hides the level, so a sender read at the ground is the gauge. Two shells that hold 3,000 gallons, and the 2,650 and 3,500 either side

The three 5130000 tanks are the tall 3,000s: the N33 is the cross-linked wall rated 1.35 by its name, at 510 pounds, and the C34 and C37-BLACK are the other black tanks in that shell, each rated as its own sheet says. The 8390000C26 sits on this tank's own 102 inch circle one inch taller and holds 2,650 gallons at 510 pounds, the tank to compare when the last few hundred gallons do not matter. The 32288 is the white 3,500 on a 96 inch base at 125 inches for a site that has the height and wants to see the level through the wall.

Vent before pump: filling a low, wide tank

• Vent and fill: the 18 inch manway is threaded and vented. The lid vent breathes a tank that is filled by gravity and drawn down by a small pump; a tanker pump pushes liquid in faster than a lid vent lets air out, so on pumped deliveries the vent is sized to the delivery rate, or the manway is opened for the fill with someone standing at it. Screen the vent against insects, run it outdoors on a liquid that fumes, and never let it plug: a blocked vent splits a tank on fill and collapses it on draw-down.
• Headspace: fill to the shoulder, not the lid. The band of wall above the liquid line lives in vapor, and it gets a light and a look every time the manway opens. A warm liquid expands, and the room it needs comes off the top.
• Outlet: the outlet field on the sheet reads 23, and we print it as the sheet gives it. Name the liquid at order and the bulkhead fitting, gasket and bolting are matched to it, with a flexible connector to hard pipe and the first valve supported off the pad, never hung on the wall.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C.

Eight feet of liquid above the outlet is a modest head, so the pump on this tank sits below the outlet where gravity primes it, and a low-level float stops it before it draws air. A wide tank is a tank people walk past and open, so the lid stays on between deliveries, the wall carries the name of the one chemical inside, and the label is renewed when the sun fades it. Where it freezes, the outlet valve and the first pipe run get trace heat or insulation; the body ices from the top down and takes it.

Where a low 3,000 earns its footprint

A co-op storing a fertilizer solution under a lean-to, a water plant with a hypochlorite room whose ceiling was framed at nine feet, and a shop with a process chemical that stands in the sun beside the building. A forklift with long forks sets 575 pounds on the pad with the forks under the body, never through the manway, and the straps go on the same day. Fill it with water to the shoulder once and hold it, watching the pad edge and the outlet fitting for a weep, then drain and dry it before the chemical arrives. Keep the pallet; a tank this wide that ever moves again moves easier on it. Write the outlet fitting size and material on the site plan; the replacement is ordered by those two words.
