Small feed rates, and a pump that has to stay primed

A small metering pump is the least forgiving thing in most plant rooms. It moves a few gallons a day, runs unattended, and will happily lose its prime on a short column of liquid and keep stroking while nothing reaches the process. A cooling tower dosing inhibitor and biocide. A boiler house on scavenger and phosphate. A small water system feeding hypochlorite where a missed dose is a reportable event. A pool on sanitizer. A greenhouse metering nutrient into irrigation. In all of them the feed rate is tiny, the interval between deliveries is long, and the last third of the vessel is exactly when the pump gives trouble. Standing the tank on its stand at 52 inches puts its low point above the pump so the suction stays flooded, lets a drain reach a bucket under gravity, and gives you space to see under the vessel, which on a small station in a corner is often the only way a slow weep is ever noticed. It also puts the 6 inch lid at a comfortable working height for a fill coupling and a level device without a step. The footprint stays 47 by 36 inches; only the height changes. The floor sees 292 lb of water at full carried through the stand, so bear the whole plan on a flat, level, continuous surface and anchor the stand before the first fill.
