Cross-linked, full density, with the big outlet

Linear polyethylene softens with heat and creeps under sustained load; cross-linked polyethylene is molded with a catalyst that ties the polymer chains into one network, so it holds its shape under a dense liquid, resists the stress cracking oxidizers cause, and tolerates heat. The trade is that it cannot be plastic-welded, so any added port is a bulkhead through a drilled hole, decided before the tank is filled. A 3 inch outlet moves liquid fast enough for a fire pump's suction or a fast gravity transfer, and 1,100 pounds of resin is 250 more than the linear tanks in this shell. Full, it puts 64,969 pounds on a 102 inch circle at the rating, which a slab in full contact carries, and the empty tank is strapped against wind. The N40 is the cross-linked 1.5 wall at this tank's weight for hypochlorite and the lighter oxidizers. The C34, C37-BLACK and N46 are the linear tanks in this shell, 250 pounds lighter, for chemicals that do not attack a linear wall. Openings as shipped

• Access: 18 inch threaded, vented manway, 130 inches up; vent outside on hypochlorite and acid service, the fill goes through a dip tube and the vent is sized for the tanker, not the tank.
• Outlet: 3 inch; a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab; decide any added port before the tank is filled, because XLPE cannot be welded.
• Service limit: 140 F / 60 C.

Hypochlorite and strong acid are hard on wetted parts, so the level sender is chosen for the chemical and read at ground level so nobody climbs for a number. Shade the tank, keep the manway closed against vapor loss, and stand it inside a berm sized to it. Acid draws water from the air and heats when it does, so the vent carries a drying trap on acid service.

Unloading without a spill

The truck's pump outruns the manway vent, so size the vent for the unload rate or give the fill its own top bulkhead and vent line. The fill pipe runs to the floor so the liquid does not free-fall and foam. A dense liquid heats when water is added to it, so a batch tank is filled with water before the chemical, never after. The first tanker into a new tank is a supervised job, slab edge and outlet fitting checked as it fills, and each delivery after it is logged with its date and strength.
