Specifying a 5,000 gallon chemical tank

Three checks come before the order. The density of the liquid at delivered concentration against the 1.9 rating. Openings, instruments, containment

• Outlet: 3 inch polypropylene female NPT bulkhead fitting with a 2 inch reducer siphon tube to the floor; a flanged transition, an expansion joint, and a valve supported off the slab. A siphon outlet needs a pump or a prime; it does not gravity-drain below the fitting.
• Access: 20 inch threaded, vented manway, vented outside on caustic and acid service; fill through a dip tube to the floor.
• Service limit: 120 F / 48 C.

Choose the level sender for the chemical with the level gauge selection guide; at 116 inches a hydrostatic sender at the outlet or radar on the manway both work. Receiving a tanker

The driver's pump can deliver faster than the manway vent can breathe, so the vent is sized for the unload rate or the fill goes through a dedicated top bulkhead with its own vent line. The fill pipe runs to the floor so caustic or coagulant does not free-fall and foam. Dense liquids heat up when diluted, so a tank topped off with water for a batch is filled water first, chemical second, never the other way. And the first delivery into a new tank is watched from start to finish, with the slab edge and the outlet fitting checked as the level climbs.

Day-to-day duty

Bulk caustic, ferric, alum and acid at water and wastewater plants that take full tanker loads; reagent storage on a process floor; fertilizer and brine at agricultural sites. Label the tank for the fire inspector and the workplace inspector at once, and keep the tanker's approach clear.
